Next movie bracket idea

Unread postby FUDU » Thu Oct 22, 2009 9:58 pm

64 best movie villains.

I did this real quick off the top of my head.

I am thinking of a few qualifications to make it less controversial and less blurry.

1. No monsters or any non humans. (with exception to characters that portray extreme human like qualities or characters that were meant to represent humans. IE: T-1000 Terminator 2, IE of a no: Alien from Alien series).

2. No human characters or human like characters that have very limited to zero dialogue. Trying to keep the integrity of real acting, IE: Michael Myers (Halloween), Jason (F13th). Obviously a great character and villain but there is no dialogue to impact the quality of the character.

Looking for some suggestions for rules or additions/subtractions. JoBu doesn't count.

Off the top of my head I got 40 I think. Some duplicate characters played by different actors, IMO both deserving mention due to remakes and the individual actor's impact on each role.

Not in any type of suggestive order what so ever.

Darth Vader (Star Wars)
Hannibal Lecter (SOTL series)
Edward the Longshanks (Braveheart)
Hans Gruber (Die Hard)
Joker (Batman) (Jack, Heath)
Lex Luther (Superman) (Hackman,Spacey)
General Zod (Superman 2)
Annie Wilkes (Misery)
Alex Forrest (Fatal Attraction)
Khan (Star Trek 2)
Commodus (Gladiator)
KGB (Rounders)
Apollo (Rocky)
Drago (Rocky 4)
Gordon Gekko (Wall Street)
Howard Payne (Speed)
Jack Torrence (Shining)
Jame Gumb (SOTL)
Magneto (X Men)
Peyton Flanders (Hand that Rocks the Cradle)
T-1000 (Terminator 2)
Witch of West (Wiz of Oz)
Dr. Evil (Austin Powers)
Agent Smith (Matrix)
John Doe (Seven)
Catherine Tramell (Basic Instinct)
Little Billy Daggett (Unforgiven)
Max Cady (Cape Fear)
Alex Delarge (Clock Work Orange)
Amon Gorth (Schinlder's List)
Nurse RAtched (Cuckoo's Nest)
Antno Chigurh (No Country For Old Men)
The Hunter (Bambi)** hard to call on whether this should be counted, considered a great villain by critics.
Will Teasle (First Blood)
Saroman (LOTR)
Eleanor Shaw (Manchurian CAndidate)
Alonzo Harris (Training Day)
Samuel Norton (Shawshank)
Gollum (LOTR)
Henry Evans (The Good Son)
Albert (The Color Purple)

Col. Nathan Jessup (Few Good Men)
Mr. Blonde (Reservoir Dogs)
Bill the Butcher (Gangs of NY)

Anti-heroes aren't evil. They don't fit the typical hero profile, but still do good. The Man with No Name, Batman, Punisher etc.

Montana is often considered a traditional villain, Corleone not so much.

The problem with a Batman as an anti hero is that he had a true villain as opposition, kind of makes Batman a hero by default.

I discount him based on monster likeness and pretty low level dialogue.

I mean how many people knew Verbal was Soze before the last 5 minutes?

He was only in that one scene. It's a really good underrated movie, he just wasn't in it enough.

People still list that movie in Tarantino's list, despite the fact he only wrote it.

Mary Tyler Moore's mother character in the movie "Ordinary People."
You know she was a good actress if she can make you hate her as much as you do in that film.

Not enough people have seen Inglorious Bastards for a character from it to be included IMO.
