Curious what the resident movie critics think of this movie.

I watched this movie for the first time in about 15-20 years the other night with my kids. Hadn't seen it since I think in the early 90s. I had seen it several times in the movie theater when I was a kid when it came out (8 years old at the time) and also on HBO or whatever it was on when it his cable in the latter part of the 80s.

Gotta say, the movie was still heartwarming and a blast to take in. Was like going down memory lane, and the excitement on my kids faces during the chase scenes or my son blurting out "awesome!" when the Elliott/ET fly on the bike and the kids all fly on bikes in the climax was priceless. Even having seen the movie many times, though never really as an adult, I even found myself still getting a little choked up at the end.

A true testament to me how a movie like this can be 27 years old and in some ways stand the test of time. Sorta like Star Wars as well. My kids love the Star Wars movies even though movies themselves were from my youth.

How does E.T. rank in all time movie history? I read through some of the Wikipedia stuff on it about all the awards it was up for and how a lot of people think it is has so many themes and is one of Spielberg's truly great works. Agree/disagree?

Caught parts of it here and there on HBO or Showtime (whichever one its on) ... but haven't sat down and watched it since I was a little kid. Be a good flick to watch with the little guy one day.

Will say though watched Star Wars with my son for the first time this past weekend after the Buckeye Debacle. Kid turned 4 three months ago, say there and was engrossed for the entire two hours. Loved it. Nagging me to watch Empire every night. Was a cool experience watching it with him.

Still the only movie I've ever seen twice in the theaters. That's a testament to it's greatness.

I remember seeing it when I was young, my parents bought us the VHS and my brother and I wore it out.

Some of the changes they made were kinda funny. Editing out the police holding guns and replacing them with Walkie Talkies.

Wizard of Oz -1939.

E.T. is a very good movie (classic? - maybe) and when it came out i compared it to Wizard Of Oz in overall "sentiment" for lack of a better word.

that's funny. i thought it was so "orenthal" and so "tim kempton" and especially so "pantera". hee-hee!!!

actually i liked the movie when it first came out. saw it probably 3 or 4 times in fact. i was in high school at the time and it was a great date movie. it was like the long ball - chicks dug it. to watch it now though, they had some really cheesy special effects back then as compared to nowadays with puppets, cgi, animatronix and the like.

it's kinda like watching another early spielberg masterpiece "jaws" in this day and age. scared the bejeebers out of me when i was a kid, but to watch it now, i just laugh at the obviously rubber shark.

May the force be with you. My daughter loves the Star Wars Trilogy. It's awesome sharing things as simple as movies with your kids.

My son who is 5 is going to be Darth Vader for Halloween. Wanted to be Luke Skywalker, but the costumes are gay so we settled on Vader. He's stoked. We popped in the original trilogy on one of our road trips to Florida last year and ever since he's been nutso over it. Got him the Star Wars Lego game for the Wii too (that's a great and funny game). Kind of cool to relive your childhood through your son/daughter like that....that they get so much enjoyment and fascination out of something you did at the same age. Timeless and epic.

ET could not eat a whopper in one bite... My opinion obviously means nothing, damn movie made its mark and tons of money!
