Finally sat down and watched this last night after having it on my list for a couple of years.
Uhm, wow (in a good, bad and horrified way all at the same time).
It is the true story of the Shirley Likens murder in Indian back in 1965 and is based around the actual testimony in the court. That said, they removed a lot of the torture this girl was actually forced to go through and painted some of the pictures (Paula especially) in a good light when they were actually among the most evil. The story was changed for the worse, but it is still powerfully told and if not for manipulating the truth I would have bit hook line and sinker.
Also, the acting by Ellen Page (abused/killed girl) and Catherine Keener (abusive woman watching the two little girls) is second to none. Both are outstanding and make the movie worth watching alone.
A worthy movie that is certainly worth seeing at some point, however, not for children. The violence is shown in a less than graphic way but you still feel Shirley's pain, which makes it watchable.
