Documentary - The Staircase

Unread postby swerb » Mon Jun 29, 2009 8:43 pm

Anyone see this?

Never heard of it before today. Someone at work was telling me it's a must see. Then I'm listening to Carolla's latest podcast on the way home, and guest David Cross called it the greatest documentary ever made.

Like six hours long. Sounds right up my alley. I love true crime stuff, shows like "48 Hours Mystery" on CBS.

Moved it right to the top of the Q.

A critical triumph across the board, Sundance Channel presents THE STAIRCASE, an edge-of-your-seat, real-life thriller from Academy Award®-winning documentary filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade ("Murder on a Sunday Morning"). With all the trappings of a classic murder mystery, THE STAIRCASE chronicles the sensational story of North Carolina author Michael Peterson, who stood trial in 2003 for the murder of his wife, Kathleen Peterson. Granted unusual access to Peterson's lawyers and his immediate family, de Lestrade presents a gripping, inside look at the high-profile murder trial in this acclaimed 8-part series that will leave you gasping for breath.

Absolutely fantastic doc/miniseries. It'll suck you in instantly.

You'll enjoy it.

Halfway through this. Three hours in, three to go. A fascinating look inside what goes in a big time trial, especially when the defendant can bring out the big gun defense team.

Hype I had heard on this though is that you go back and forth on guilty/innocent on Peterson. Through three hours ... I've had the same thought: guilty as sin. Made sure not to look up how the verdict came out, so no spoilers. Just no way those head lacerations coulda came from a fall. Both were drunk, my guess is she found out about his gay military porn addiction/bisexuality ... and they had a huge fight that ended bad.

Looking forward to the last three hours.

Not going to give anything away here, but I went into watching this thing not knowing a damned thing about the trial.

The twists and turns that ended up happening were straight up dumbfounding in that context.

Never saw a lot of the crap coming.

Two months later, I finally finished this tonight. Beat waborat though. :nanner:

Highly recommend this documentary for any people out there that like true crime, "48 Hours Mystery" type stuff. Or for anyone that is fascinated with high profile murder trials, and all the things that go into them.

Going into watching this ... has heard from all the people that recommended it, that you go back and forth on guilty vs. innocent. 3 hours into the 6 hour documentary, I was convinced of a guilty verdict. Last 3 hours, you are bouncing back and forth. Peterson's defense team I thought did an exemplary job. Note though, the documentary was produced by the Peterson team. They make the prosecution look like inept raging hilbillies in spots in this.

Don't want to give anything away to anyone who may want to see this. But it's a fun ride. A super look inside all the inner workings of a very high profile murder trial, all the things that go on behind the scenes. Edge of your seat by the end when the jury is deliberating, and then when they deliver the verdict.

After the fact, was very interesting tonight to do all the Googling on this trial that I has been avoiding till I finished watching the doc. To read all the things that have happened in the 5 years since the trial. The interviews with all the jurors.

Just a fascinating case for those that like to play armchair detectives.
