Affliction: Trilogy Cancelled

Unread postby XUDawg » Fri Jul 24, 2009 3:36 pm

According to sherdog.com, the Affliction event is a no-go.

Josh Barnett's positive drug test seems to have put the final nail in Atencio's promotion days. This is going to cost those involved a lot of expense.

More importantly however, it leaves Fedor looking for a new home. While he is married to M-1, that organization cannot promote the type of big events that are worthy of his stature. It looks like he'll either go to Dream, Strikeforce, or make some small capitulations in order to fight Lesnar and Co. in the UFC.

Whether this was a deal Atencio cut with UFC in order for him to go back being a sponsor, or if it is just symbolic of his awful promotional acumen, the Events division of Affliction is dead.

Affliction has confirmed this.
A lot of the guys will fight on the M1 card that goes on soon is what is being reported.
Strikeforce and Affliction are looking to join forces soon possibly.
Fedor is still under contract and this cancellation doesn't really change anything with him except it just shows him that he needs to get into the UFC if he really wants to prove he's still the best.
Dana White is quoted at saying he doesn't want Affliction to go away as a fight promotion, they have been doing better WITH them around.
An Affliction lawyer reportedly offered all the Affliction contracts to the UFC in order for the UFC fighters to be able to wear their line during/at their events again
No dice.

You have the scoop on who Diaz is going to fight at Cyborg-Carano? I know Riggs backed out, and GracieFighter.com loves making fun of the other guy on their website:

Joe Riggs has pulled out of his fight with Nick Diaz after suffering a bad reaction to an as of yet undisclosed drug. According to sources close to the fighter, Riggs will be recovering in the hospital for the next couple of weeks and therefore unable to fight Diaz. At this time it is unclear if Riggs' problem is physical or mental.

Awesome.

No scoop on Diaz yet, I was actually hoping to see him and Riggs go at it again
I like Riggs, but he's not a match for Diaz anymore. Riggs did beat him in the UFC in the past though.
That is a great post also, gotta love that.
That card has gotten a lot weaker with Diaz/Riggs off and also Werdum/Overeem scrapped
