Paul Williams vs Winky Wright 4/11/2009

NOBODY is talking about this fight for some reason.
HBO Saturday night.
I'm pumped for this one.
Winky is back almost a 2 year layoff.
Wright is a former top 5 fighter and he takes on my pound for pound king.
I could see this going many different ways. I love "The Puinsher" but he's in for a tough battle.

I'm thinking Winky's long layoff, and possibly his fighting style, has something to do with the overall ambiguity surrounding this fight. He used to be one of my favorite fighters, but all of the bellyaching about being cheated out of the Taylor and Hopkins decisions and then not fighting for forever...I guess I sort of forgot about what it is about his game that I appreciated so much to begin with.

I like Dan Birmingham too being that he's from my hometown and he appears to do things the "right" way. They just sort of rendered themselves irrelevant with the layoff...although that may change on Saturday.

This fight also sets up to be very tactical and not a high action affair that again Winky loses on a close decision, not necessarily captivating TV though. Arreola vs McCline...that may be the more interesting fight of the night IMO.

McCline was a slob, just showed up for the payday, coulda and shoulda got up from that knockout.

Next fight for Arreola has to be either Vitali Klitschko or Povetkin.

Haye/Wlad Klitschko in June. Five intriguing names in the heavyweight division right now. Still weak, but at least we have some compelling fights coming up.

McCline was a disinterested fighter.

Seemed relieved to take that upper cut and go down. And you're right, he was less interested in getting up off the floor than he was getting into the ring.

Winky hasn't fought in 2 years and is 37. Williams is a lot to deal with, even if youre in your prime.

That said, I been predcting against Winky the last 5 years, and have usually been wrong.

Yeah, hes a tough fight. The massive punch output, the long arms and various angles those punches come from, and his height and constant head movement.

He's much more dangerous at 147, 154, but also has the potential to beat anyone at 160.

Gutty effort by Winky. The antithesis of what we saw from that fat slob McCline in the 1st fight.

Williams ... just too much. God damn is he a lot to deal with. Doesn't hit that hard, especially at 160, but good lord does he hit you a lot.

Be interesting to see what he does next. Says he wants Sugar Shane. That would be a great fight.
