The Vitale meltdown after the brackets are revealed is one of my five favorite sports moments of every year.

Funniest thing is ... if Va Tech and Colorado would have got in, and only 5 of the 37 at large spots would have gone to mid majors, he would have been freaking out about that.

I am all for the VCUs and UAB's getting in over the Va Techs of the world. I was before George Mason and Butler's Final Four runs. Don't see how anyone can be pissed about Va Tech or a 70 RPI Colorado team that went 8-8 in a shitty Big 12 not getting in.

Kentucky doesn't worry me. They're undisciplined, poorly coached, and inexperienced. Athleticism aside, OSU is far superior.

However, the schedule comes out, I am excited for these games. I bet the Bucks play at 7:30, overall #1 seed should be in prime time. Would think Syracuse should play in the afternoon as the Orange should cruise. Toss-up on the other two. I mostly just use his website for the matchup stuff and to see what the lines are doing at the sharper books. I met him in Vegas at the Hilton Superbook last month. That was pretty cool.

I'm baffled by the starting times this year? The nice thing is it looks like the networks have alternated all the games by 20 minutes +/-, so hopefully we'll catch the end of games and not need split screens, etc

The interesting thing about the times is how they're set up for Cleveland? The first game doesn't start until 2:10, then OSU is "scheduled" for 4:40. OK, let's say neither of those games is long or goes into OT(s), then the early primetime game starts at 7:25pm. How do they feel they're going to get 15,000+ people out of their seats, clear the arena and then get everyone back inside and in their seats in 45 minutes or less???

This doesn't make any sense...

Guess there won't be any meetups for dinner between 5-7pm like in the past down there...Not to mention, drinking $7.50 shit beer all day...

The other thing that's crazy is the play in game between Clemson/UAB, they finish up at midnight on Tuesday and then open vs West Virginia on Thursday at noon? You woulda thought the schedule makers would be a little more generous for the NCAAs and had them play in the evening

OK,

I know that I have been a bit of a ghost around here lately, I apologize for that, sometimes life takes over and there just isn't time for the activities that you enjoy doing. That said, I have a bit more time right now (before I start my evening MBA program in the fall) and I am looking forward to being a bit more involved in the discussions around here.

Now, here are some of my observations from the 2010-2011 NCAA basketball season, use them in your brackets/wagers at your own risk:

1. The Big East is overrated. Don't get me wrong, the conference is good but the "goodness" is defined by depth not by "greatness at the top." I am not sold on Pitts/ND as elite teams, I have seen each play about a zillion times as a resident in the middle of Big East land, and I think that they are good (I think ND is better) but neither is great. This is a case where I think the pundits have confused mass mediocrity for quality, so look for the record 11 BE teams to "struggle" and quickly get weened down to about 4 teams.

2. The Big Ten is not great either. OSU is a dangerous team, any team that can shoot 3's like they can and has 3 go to scorers is dangerous. The lack of size and all those second chance points/offensive rebounds that they give up will make at least a couple of games white knucklers. As for the rest of the league, I am not impressed. I say don't count out MSU for a decent run because, at this point betting against Tom Izzo in the tourney just seems dumb. Between the BE and the B10(ish) they have 18 tournament berths, realistically they have about 3 great teams and 7 solid teams between the two conferences and I am looking for a lot of early carnage.

3. The top of the ACC is underrated. UNC is peaking at the right time and it is a coach that has been there done that... same with Duke. I think both of these teams make runs. The rest of the ACC is blah.

4. So, if I don't like the B10, BE, or ACC who do I like.... the field. This year, like none that I can remember is set up for early round midmajor carnage. IMO there are about 5-7 teams that can pretty much handle the Mid Majors (for the most part) and they are ranked 1's and 2's (for the most part) so IMO if your bracket is littered with 3 and 4 seeds in the sweet sixteen I think you are going to be disappointed. Ultimately I think the 1's and 2's will dominate the final four, but I think there is going to be a lot of early round carnage.

MSU vs. UCLA
MSU/UCLA vs. Florida
UNC vs. Washington (tough out, but I like NCU)

those are just some upset alerts that I have off the top of my head. I am also a bit concerned for SDSU.

Couldn't agree more, Swerb. I'm not about to parse resumes but Vitale and all these power conference honks conveniently forget that the Colorados and VA Techs get home and homes with several top 25 teams and hence an opportunity for a big win (with no shame in losing, either) just about every week. And, since they're in the middle of the pack, they fly under the radar and can easily catch these teams on a bad night over the grind of a conference season. I'm pretty sure if you gave UAB and VCU 10 chances to play top 25 teams (several of which would be at home), they'd come up with a few of the "signature wins" that talking heads go nuts over. And while these mid major conferences aren't as good top to bottom, the ones that routinely send at large teams (CAA, Missouri Valley, etc.) still have quality basketball. The tournament caliber teams from these conferences have a bullseye on their back all year and probably need to win 75% of their conference games to even be in the discussion (UAB and VCU were a combined 26-8). And that's before we even touch the fact that BCS schools don't want to play them in the non-conference season.

ODU v Butler is arguably the most forgettable game in the tourney and ur pimpin it inexplicably. Probably just some wierd sort of 6 degrees of CSU seperation.

This Butler team is just as good as last years. Lose Hayward, add that big white freshman big man they have. Everyone else is back w all that experience.

And they are ROLLIN right now after a crap start.

They're gonna beat a good ODU team and will be getting like 4-5 points from Pitt. Rest of that bracket is real soft. Crappiest 1, 2, 3, and 4 seeds in the tourney .. all that bracket.

Pummlin' Detroit mercy does nothing for me. Nice X mas tourney, but too many L's again better teams. they belong in the tourney to be sure, but just not a threat. I compare them to like a UD. And thus a boring matchup.

Gotta disagree on the #2 seed. I think Florida's right there with SDSU as the best #2. I think the only thing that makes ND a good #2 is that they have nobody in that bracket who is going to run them into the ground. If they faced a Washington type squad, they'd be in trouble. ND can be beaten by A&M. Probably not FSU.

I can't say the same about UCLA/MSU beating FLA. FLA has a free ride to the E8, I think.

Weakest #3? For sure.

I like defense in a single elimination tourney. Butler isn't playing well enough defensively ILO. For that matter, neither is Florida. Again, Florida out of conference beat K. State in December when K. State had suspensions/injuries, and they nipped Xavier. That's it. Love their coach, but the way they defend they gotta hit 6 straight games of threes.

The lower half of that bracket, where BYU is 3 and Florida 2 is the key to many a bracket pool. Not sure I could argue if you wanted to tell me ANY of those 8 teams were going to get to the elite 8. Some have a better chance, but not by much.
