One Big Ten Coach doesn't vote for Turner as POY

Unread postby danwismar » Tue Mar 09, 2010 12:59 am

The investigation is underway to find out which idiot Big Ten coach didn't think Evan Turner, who led the conference in scoring, rebounding and steals, and was second in assists, wasn't deserving of the Player of the Year Award. (Tom Crean is the leading suspect)

Turner was named POY, and was unanimous first team all-Big Ten, of course..

Thad Matta was voted Coach of the Year by the media. Matt Painter of Purdue was the coaches choice for COY.

Buford and Lighty made third team in the media voting. Lighty wasn't on the coaches third team.

Dallas Lauderdale made the All-Defensive first team.

Wonder why they don't list who got that one vote.....

Could be just about any of them.

I am going with either Izzo (Lucas) or Bruce Weber (McCamey).

i think it was actually thad matta as i don't think you can vote for one of your own players. i could be wrong though. if you can vote for your own and it is another coach, there would have to be some serious sour grapes there. maybe purdue's coach picked robbie hummel???

Michigan State's Tom Izzo made a point about Turner's gaudy stats the other week, saying, "He gets stats and deserves some of them, but when you're playing 40 minutes a game and you've got the ball in your hands 98 percent of the time ..."

For the record, I have as much respect for Robbie Hummel as the next guy, but...

http://www.bigten.org/sports/m-baskbl/s ... fldrs.html

Big Ten rankings:

Scoring - Hummel - 7th ---- Turner - 1st

Rebounding - Hummel - 6th ---- Turner - 1st

Assists - Hummel - not in top 15 ---- Turner - 2nd

FG Pct. Hummel - Not in top 15 ---- Turner - 6th

Steals - Hummel - not in top 15 ---- Turner - 2nd

FT Pct - Hummel 1st ---- Turner - 14th

Hummel - nice player...excellent FT shooter...didn't have a great season...sorry he got hurt...

...in any event, he shouldn't be in the POY conversation.

BTW, Izzo's comment about Turner's 40 minutes per game is also ill-informed. He averaged 34.6 minutes, and eight guys in the conference (including Diebler and Lighty) played more minutes per game.

I'm guessing he was a little off on his "handling the ball 98% of the time" as well ;-) ;)

Thad's reaction after the buzzer beater versus scUM tells me he just might think he knows who did not vote for Evan.

Interesting point Pup. That'd be one hell of a story if so.

2/1 he currently coaches in Michigan.
mmm, this is, a tasty burger!
