Civil War - Oregon/Oregon State

Unread postby swerb » Thu Dec 03, 2009 10:29 am

Fired up for this one tonight. Autzen Stadium is going to be a zoo. Ducks 10 point favorites. Buckeyes get the winner in Pasadena.

Two great pint sized RBs in LaMichael James and Jacquizz Rodgers. Oregon's high voltage spread option offense against the Beavers defense, the best in the Pac 10. Schools just 40 miles apart, with a genuine dislike for one another.

113th edition of the Civil War. First time it's ever been winner take all for the Rose Bowl berth.

I got tomorrow off work and a fridge full of Christmas Ale. It's all good.

I'm excited for this one as well. I'm thinking Oregon blowout or a last second/OT game.

Oregon State's one of those schools that nobody's really mentioned while Oregon has gotten the big headlines. Personally, I think OreSt's overrated at 13 (AP). They can prove me wrong tonight.

The conventional wisdom is saying we should be rooting for Oregon, since a Buckeye victory over Oregon St. in the Rose Bowl would be meaningless (in terms of helping national perception of the Ohio State program) and a loss to them would be disastrous. Only a win over the Ducks in Pasadena will do for the program what needs to be done.

For example, here's Rob Oller from the Dispatch:

Not sure I buy all that, but it's interesting to talk about...

Here's more on scouting both Oregon and Oregon St. from Mark Rea (editor of Buckeye Sports Bulletin)

Impressed with Canfield the times I've watched the Beavers this year.

Although, he's never walked into a place yet that he's going to walk into tonight.

Is anyone else on this board offended that they call this the "Civil War"??? Reducing the greatest conflict on US soil to the level of a football game? A war in which men lost their lives to preserve the Union only 150 years ago? Too soon, I say, too soon!

JUST KIDDING.

As a B-level Buckeye fan (Ohio born, not alum, CFB fan, Dayton's a basketball school), I'll be tuned to preview what's coming in the Rose Bowl. I'd rather see the Bucks beat Oregon- if simply because they are the bigger name. Any bowl win over Pac 10 will help OSU's psyche and national profile.

I've had a feeling for the last three weeks that Oregon St is going to win this one.

We'll see...

I wouldn't put it past them, for sure. You can never count out a Mike Riley football team in any game. AFAIC he's on the short list of best coaches we have in this game.

A couple flags would explain the Oregon KR not having a single OSU player withing 5 yards the entire 95 yd return.

And then they turn it over.

The plot thickens.

Fun game so far.

The poise of Canfield has been really impressive.

Boy that O-Line cannot go one drive without a false start. (Or. St.)

That injury looked pretty rough. Tough getting on his teammates as he was getting carted off the field.

Why do you not go for three there? His kicker seems fine. I don't get it. Even Oregon marches straight down the field and scores you are down 8.

Oregon State had its chance had the safety or corner (can't remember) could have tackled the Oregon QB on the fourth and two. He made contact but Masoli basically bounced off him to get the first down. Tremendous game.
"It's all about winning for me, and I think the Cavs are committed to doing that," he said. "But at the same time I've given myself options to this point, and like I said before, me and my team, we have a game plan that we're going to execute, and we'll see what we get."

"We had a great time together."

IMO if this game is in Corvallis, Oregon State wins. Was actually pulling for them, knew they'd keep it close wire to wire and actually predicted them to win, but like someone mentioned earlier, this will be a much bigger win for the Buckeyes if we can pull it off. Which I think we can, see 2003 Fiesta Bowl. Similarities in the matchup are everywhere.
