Cleveland Indians
What They Need: Bullpen help

Word is that Eric Gagne won't waive his no-trade clause unless the acquiring team agrees to make him their closer. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Indians appear loath to do this. Why? Joe Borowski ranks second in the AL in saves this season, but he's also got a 5.30 ERA. There's yet another reason not to pay too much attention to the save statistic. The Tribe needs bullpen depth, and if they have the chance to get an elite, shutdown closer like Gagne, they should jump on it and accommodate him. Failing that, Akinori Otsuka or Octavio Dotel would be a sensible addition.

Detroit Tigers
What They Need: Bullpen help

The Tigers have a strong rotation and the best offense in the game. What they don't have is a reliable bullpen. Here's another team that could use Eric Gagne, provided Detroit is willing to relegate Todd Jones to a setup role. They'll get something done.

So both teams need the same thing, and Perry fully expects the Tigers to react and question wether the Indians will or not. Should be an interseting couple of weeks.

There is also this:

Colorado Rockies
What They Need: Catcher

Catcher was a problem last year, and it's a problem again in 2007. This season, Yorvit Torrealba and Chris Iannetta have combined to hit just .243 AVG/.326 OBP/.366 SLG, and those numbers of course are subject to "Coorsification."

Perry seems to be skewing statistics to make his point.

Don't pay too much attention to the save statistic? What about ERA? Hasn't everyone in STO wing of the media been going to great lengths to remind us that Borowski's lofty ERA is due to a couple of bad outings?

It's not like Borowski has been pitching like a 5.30 ERA pitcher most of the time. Perry conveniently leaves that out. If that were the case, he wouldn't be anywhere close to AL lead in saves because he wouldn't be the Tribe's closer anymore. And if that were the case, the Indians wouldn't be in this conversation because they'd be in fourth place and leading the league in blown saves again.

And if Perry thinks Gagne is still an "elite, shutdown closer," then I have a message for him: 2003 is on the line. It wants its non-flip-down cell phone back.

Otsuka might be worth paying for. Maybe Chad Cordero or John Rauch from the Nationals. Not Gagne, a guy whose elbow is so shredded that doctors needed to remove nerve tissue so he doesn't feel pain anymore.

And Fuentes has been placed on the DL after being replaced as the Rockies closer. He blew 4 straight saves over 10 days is now hurt.

Nothing serious in regardto the injury, and all those guys have those bad runs, but you may not be improving enough over Borowski to give up anything other than scraps for Fuentes.

Shoppach for Fuentes? It would never happen.

I'm so glad i'm not Shapiro this time of year, or ever really. Damned if you do...

I would try to make everyone happy, which doesn't work in this business
