What will it take to get one of these guys?

Unread postby The Math God » Fri Jul 06, 2007 12:14 pm

In looking over the potential free agents for the coming season and trying to figure out what teams might be sellers, the following names rose to the surface.

Tribe fans should not expect much. There is not a lot of decent free agents available and a lot of teams after them.

What might the Tribe have to give up to get one, or more, of these guys for the stretch run?

Outfield
Eric Byrnes, Ariz
Aaron Rowand, Phil
Mike Cameron, San Diego
Adam Dunn, Cinn
Brad Wilkerson, Tex
Corey Patterson, Balt
I didn't put Ichiro on the list as I don't see him leaving Seattle
I didn't put Torii Hunter on the list as I don't see the Twins trading him to us
I didn't put Jermaine Dye on the List as I don't see the Sox trading him to us

Pitching
Jason Isringhausen, St. Louis
Francisco Cordero, Milwaukee
Scott Linebrink, San Diego
Eric Gagne, Texas

At the top of my list, of guys I think we can get, are Rowand and Isringhausen.
The Phillies and Cards need pitching that is ready to step into action in a bad way. That is something we have quite a bit of.
We have CC for next year (maybe longer if he can be signed) and that might make somebody like Byrd or Sowers available. We also have quite a few OF type players that could be packaged.

If Rowand is the best we can do, I pass.

Jermaine Dye is what we need, and would be a perfect fit....but no way the White Sox trade him to us....although for just a 3 month rental maybe they don't care as it doesn't affect next year.

Pass on all of them. Come high, or don't come at all. We have enough average to above average players on the team. Bring in a star or stay put.

If they're still 12.5 back and 4th place a few weeks from now, and we offer the best package, I think they'd trade with us.

The Sox need to decide if they're a few tweaks away from contending again or due for a full rebuild. That will drive their decisions at the deadline.

Edited to add: Dye would be a great fit.

Rowand is having a huge year, and does all the little things. I would absolutely love to see the Indians acquire him. Not sure if hes ever played LF or RF though. Hes a beast in CF.

No way the Phils deal him though. They are still very. very much in it ... and in a win now mode. Charlie is managing for his job.

IIRC, Shapiro has always had a hard on for Wilkerson, who is on fire right now. Just went deep three times in one game, and went deep in 2 of the 3 games before that. He plays 1b, LF, RF ... he's prolly the most likely acquisition of that OF group. Though I'd be surprised if the Indians acquire an OF.

I believe Shapiro will press very, very hard for a 7th/8th inning arm, but its going to be a brutally tough bidding market, and the Tigers will be sure to be telling teams they'll beat any offer we make.

Wouldn't touch Wilkerson with a ten foot pole. He has power, but that .230 average coupled with the high K-rate would drive me away.

Agree that Philly won't trade Rowand unless they take a dive in July. I don't think he fits anyways.

Byrnes might be okay but I think we have something equal or better to him in Francisco.

Adam Dunn's got the power but the average sucks and Cincy always asks for way too much.

Cameron's another CF and he's older than dirt. At least it seems that way.

Patterson's a non-entity in Baltimore. Ick.

I think Dye could be a realistic possibility because he's a free agent and the Sox might not see us re-signing him. He's also having a megacrappy season.

Atlanta's hanging in there, but I wonder if they'd entertain offers for Jones. I also am not sure how much I'd want Jones and his .199 batting average. I might consider signing him to a free agent deal if this crummy season brings his price down.

Linebrink would be a fantastic acquisition for the bullpen, but SD is fighting to win the NL West so I'm not sure they'll trade a key component to their pen even with him becoming a free agent.

Gagne doesn't want to come to Cleveland.

Isringhausen is a possibility but he won't come cheap. He's got a very reasonable $8M team option for next year and has been lights out this year.

I'd take Byrnes or Dye off that list if the price were cheap enough...and just about all the bullpen help qualifies in my book as well.

I just don't think Byrnes can be had though AZ is contending still. They have alot of young talent though so you never know. He could give Jason Michaels a real run in the man-perm department as well which is always good.

I was just reading in a fantasy baseball article about how Byrnes is the king of the 2nd half slump.

Arizona opens after the break at home with San Diego, then goes to Milwaukee and Chicago and could be out of contention

Philly opens with St. Louis then goes to LA and SD and also could be out of it before the 31st

Most of the comments agree with one of my original points, not a lot out there among the guys that will be free agents.

Go get Loften, Thome and Howry.

It helps in two ways, additional talent on the field and solves our attendance issues.

I would rip my eyes out of my sockets if we acquired Corey Patterson. I would stay with what we have if we could only get those players. At this point, I say Jermaine Dye or bust.

A healthy Brad Lidge would also be the perfect fit in the bullpen.

FUDU you are living in the past

We need a bat

Lofton would be OK if we needed average and steals
He is hitting 296 with 20 steals, but only 5 homers

Thome is hitting 269 with 13 HR and 42 RBI
I'd buy a ticket to boo him and I don't think Tribe fans will ever get over his sad departure and his my wife is my rock act. I think Albert Belle would be welcomed back first

Howry is having a decent year. 41 innings, 4.14 ERA, 33 Ks 5 W and 4 SV

We need to find some new players that fit, not recycle guys we "got rid of"

I hear Carlos Baerga, Sandy Alomar and Charles Nagy are available

Jul. 5 : Mets purchased the contract of Alomar Jr. from Triple-A New Orleans before Wednesday night's game, reports Newsday.

David Justice is available, I bet.

I am pretty sure we lead MLB in homers.

We lead the AL, but we're 3rd behind Cincy & the Brewers in total HRs.

We need more setup help. We can't keep pitching Betancourt so much, he's gonna get burned out.

I'd love to get Johnny Mac back as our utility guy and let Rouse go or package him in a trade. Another piece that poses a problem is Marte. I didn't realize he was out of options after this year. If this is the case, he has to be traded, because I don't see him making the club next year. I guess I'd like to see them go after Griffey. They really need another bat to help drive in runs, especially if Pronk can't get his crap together.
