7/3 vs. Tigers 'Showdown in Motown Pt.1' Gamethread

Byrd 7-3 4.67
'Byrd was particularly pleased with his outing against the A's on Thursday, because it was one of the few times this season he has lasted seven full innings. In fact, Byrd has only achieved that feat four times this year. In those seven innings against Oakland, he gave up three runs on 10 hits with no walks and two strikeouts to earn his seventh win. In his previous start against the Tigers on May 25, Byrd gave up four runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings and earned a victory.'

vs.

Robertson 4-6 4.82
'Robertson showed glimpses of what made him a successful pitcher last year in his first start off the disabled list on June 26 against the Rangers. In his first start since he was placed on the 15-day DL with a "tired arm" on June 7, Robertson allowed one run on four hits over 5 1/3 innings. He fastball appeared to have a bit more life then early in the season when he was struggling with his velocity. The radar gun at Comerica Park had him clocked as high as 91 mph at one point. Robertson has faced the Twins more than any other team during his career and is 5-7 with a 4.28 ERA in 16 starts against Minnesota.'

Tribe Lineup-

Sizemore CF
Blake 3B
Peralta SS
Martinez 1B
Hafner DH
Micheals LF
Shoppach C
Guiterrez RF
Barfield 2B

Tigers Lineup-

Granderson CF
Polanco 2B
Sheffield DH
Ordonez RF
Guillen SS
Rodriguez C
Casey 1B
Monroe LF
Inge 3B

Will the Tribe strike first in very hostile territory, or will the Tigers get revenge against the warriors of Lake Erie? STAY TUNED, KIDS.

This Umps strike zone is ridiculous. It is so inconsistent. You can tell the players are a bit frustrated.

At least Robertson has made boatload of pitches in the 1st 2 innings.
Bring on that depleted Detroit bullpen.

Looks like one of Byrd's brutal outings. He's getting the ball up and not locating.

Shoppach made contact! :P :-P

At least the offense is stepping up to the challenge and coming back to help out Byrd

On a separate, Ivan is such a whinner.

Could Blake be ANY worse at fielding? He's the new Peralta.

Andy Marte, please.

Babrook-please no one can be as bad at fielding at Jhonny.

Casey may have his issues, but don't put him in the same boat. :P :-P

If Marte could sniff the Mendoza line, than maybe his defense would be worth it.

The facts of this game are:

1) Nate Robertson stinks and we let him get away with a bunch of bad pitches. I don't know what we were doing standing there and looking at that average crap he was offering up. There was little movement on any of his pitches that were not breaking balls and he got severely lucky in a couple of instances. If you ask me, we should have chased him out of the 2nd inning. Hafner needs not to be in the lineup tonight. I have always been one who believes - put your best lefty in against a lefty and nobody else but righties. Sizemore is that lefty.

2) Paul Byrd makes me want to punch my walls in when I watch him pitch. He's not pitching a horrible game, but he's inconsistent from inning to inning. I am getting tired of the offspeed trickery. Sheffield sure wasn't fooled. A team like the Tigers - a wonder they don't know how to club Byrd, considering their credentials as a run producing factory. Paul lives around the plate and that's good and bad. Stay away from Sheffield...too much bat speed for an 85 mph pitch.

3) This ump is bad. I am tired of these half ass strike zones. MLB needs to reevaluate and stop this. That stike 3 call on Victor was in the same spot the previous ball was in. Be consistent and stop with the whole "make up call" mentality.

4) We need to win tonight. I hate facing Kenny Rogers and he is mowing 'em down. Much like I hate Jamie Moyer, Rogers is that pitcher that'll just drive you nuts for 20 years.

5) Blake's defense, while often lackluster, is nowhere nearly as poor as Peralta, who I see us turning into a 3rd sacker before too long. He doesn't have the glove to play the 6 spot and usually seems to crack on big hop balls. Marte, I agree, would easily be in Cleveland if he could hit .250, but he cannot. We're better off with Blake and Rouse, even though Lil Mikey can barely see over the steering wheel.

All in all, I will be estatic if we take 2/3 in this series. I was at the last series where we split with them in Cleveland and they really hammered us in those last 2 games. Of course, "Sour Sowers" and Cliff "hanger breaking ball" Lee were bad in those two outings. I really thought Det was about to leave us in the dust.

Ok, it's bot of 6th. Byrd needs to get one more inning in and then we can hopefully go with Perez, Betancourt, and NO Mastny or Cabrera!

WOW - Fransisco comin through!

What a gutsy call by Wedge. This one paid off. It didn't make a whole lot of sense to PH Ben for Michaels (unless J is hurt?). Ben has to get in the lineup. I am still under the impression that he's a very raw hitter (a lot like a younger Manny) and doesn't know when to lay off certain pitches, but he is making a strong case to be inserted. Wow.

More Ben and Frankie. Less Trot and Dellucci (when healthy)

The announcers on FSN Detroit were just saying that the Tribe leads MLB with 25 come from behind wins. This, IMO, is a direct by product of the fact that most opposing starters are out of the game by the 7th inning (at the latest) regardless of how effective they have been.

Christ, it's slow as hell.

400 replies on a single gamethread? Jesus.

'We just gave up the tying homerun to a kid with 12 career at bats.'

If Fransisco started every game and hit and this rate, and he wouldn't, but if he did, he would hit 69.2 HR, assuming my usually flawed math is correct.

That call was some crap. You ask the guy to speed it up, if an honest effort is made, which it has been, than that should be the end of the story. It isn't way over if it is over 20 seconds. He should get a "shot clock" if they are going to actually time him.

It's funny that the umps wait until the Tribe's on the road to start that sh*t with Raffy.

Is it selective enforcement? Nah the umps would never do that. :roll

Rule 8.04. Pitcher has 12 seconds to deliver to pitch. Raffy waited 15.

He has 20 seconds to pitch to the batter.

Strange they never enforced it in Cleveland. A's announcer Ray Fosse was barking about Raffy last week. I bet he told Beane, and Beane got in touch with the league office. Just speculation FWIW.

GUIT' WITH THE WEB GEM NOMINEE.

Barfield should have went for that. It was closer to 2B then to Grady, and Grady was playing WAY deep.

And now we face the heart of the Detroit war machine.

Wow - Mastny in this situation was dumb, dumb, dumb.

We haven't lost yet, but if I am a betting man, this is a good time to throw the bank on Det.

One good decision erased by a bad one. Mastny is the worst reliever we have, easily.

It is just a disaster everytime Mastny pitches now. Time to send him to Buffalo to get his confidence back.

The Indians have a 4-man bullpen. They NEED to find another arm or two.
