Take a look at Raffy's stats for 2004.

that year he saved 4 games in 11 chances (36.4%) as his 7 blown saves were tied for 3rd in the AL behind Esteban Yan (10) and Jason Grimsley (9)...His 6 relief losses were tied for 5th among AL relievers. Recorded an ERA of 4.15 in April (13.0IP, 17H, 6ER) and was 0-2 w/2 saves in 12 May outings (2.92ERA, 12.1IP, 13H, 4ER)...Hit a rough stretch in June, allowing runs in 5 of his 11 outings while compiling an ERA of 6.75 (10.2IP, 13H, 8ER)...

Just think if we had lost patience with him and DFA'd him. At one point in his career he was even sold to a Japanese minor league team. He is such a valuable part of this team today. Now project this onto some of the young talent we have wasting away in our bullpen and perhaps we might be more cautious in giving up too early and seeking veteran help.
