40 Man Roster- Who to drop??

Unread postby MadThinker88 » Fri Jun 15, 2007 12:18 pm

As this season goes on, I am convinced that Cliff Politte or another minor league reliever that is not on the 40 man currently (Jensen Lewis for example) will be brought up to help the big league club.

With Stanford's addition the entire 40 man roster is filled, so I ask: Who gets dropped off 1st?

Barring an injury that results in someone moving to the 60 day DL (and getting exempted from the 40 man), there are a number of good possible drop targets: Juan Lara, Mike Koplove and Hector Luna quickly jump out to me. Who do you thing gets booted off this island first??

Luna, then Koplove. Though I'm convinced they're trying to trade Koplove.

Luna's not a bad choice, his defense has been atrocious.

I could also see a two-for-one deal, especially involving Stanford himself.

Speaking of Politte.....he could very well enter the bullpen mix by the end of this month or near the All-Star break. He is pitching on a rehab assignment in Akron, and has not had any setbacks yet. Could Politte be Bob Howry 2004 Part II? Howry was pretty effective in 2004 when he was called up mid-season. Maybe Oldberto is biding his time until Politte is ready....

For all the grief Oldberto gets, has anyone noticed that he's actually been pretty useful lately? He's not going to be Betancourt, but he's had four scoreless innings in a row and a 1.93 ERA in June. (I know it's small sample, but EVERYTHING is a small sample with relievers.)

We can't trade a guy like that within the division! What if Beefalo is competing for a playoff spot?!

I think it's time to stop thinking 1-for-1 and figure out how to execute a quantity-for-quality trade.

Hoynsie says in the PD today that if Stanford is the odd man out when Westbrook comes back, then he'll probably be DFA'd, which means they have 10 days to trade, release, or put him on waivers. I can't see how he'd make it through waivers, being a left-handed starter who has pitched great at AAA and had an excellent start against the Marlins the other night.

Which means they probably trade him for a prospect. I just hope he doesn't go on to become the next Brandon Phillips or Jeremie Guthrie.

Let's hope Stanford makes his case in his next start. If he pitches well again, that will make it very hard for them to DFA him. They'll look pretty stupid if they do.
