Carmona has struck out 4 in 4, including at least one in three different innings. Minor blip, or state change?

(Scoreless in bottom of 4th)

I don't know if that K-rate will improve this year, but I expect it to improve in the coming years. Sort of like Kevin Brown, as I believe he was around a 4-5 K/9 guy early in his career, then became a 7-9 K/9 guy I believe (I didn't look, but this is my understanding).

How about Gutierrez with an opposite field shot? Talk about a wall scraper. 326-foot HR per the radio guys.

Didn't see the shot, but I saw Barfield made an out on the basepaths right before it ...

Another K for Carmona in the 5th.

Yeah, Barfield was trying to get an extra base on the throw home....would have had it but he flinched around 2B.

Gonna have to start calling Carmona "Mr. Business Man Special". In two noon Thursday starts, so far he has thrown 15 shutout innings.

Jason Michaels homered to CENTER? (GameCast makes it look like a pretty good shot: doesn't clear the wall by much, but the wall is quite a jolt away.)

What does John Buck hit against Cleveland, like .850?

Peralta has to make a better throw there. That was a makeable double-play. Had more than enough time to make a quality throw. Hope it doesn't come back to haunt us this inning.

It didn't, we're all right. But that's two days in a row with lousy plays from Peralta.

Carmona's coming out to pitch the 8th? He's at 100 pitches ...

Edit: No, it's Betancourt. Right move, IMO.

It's pretty funny: GameCast says that Garko has taken two strikes, neither of which was actually IN the STRIKE ZONE.

Edit: well, I mean, it's funnier with a lead than with a deficit.

Kind of stupid to play for one when up 2.

If we score another here, do you bring out JoBo with a 4 or greater lead?

Seems excessive, especially since Michaels isn't much of a DP threat. Oh, well, we got a sac fly, I can't complain too much.

His last outing was crummy, I have to say yes.

BTW, the Royals' relievers should consider opening their eyes when they throw. They are really blunderbusses today.

Two-run double by Sizemore, now 6-1.

Still think it's Borowski for the 9th, but maybe Mastny. Someone needs to get quality work in.

Damn, Blake has fouled off 6 two-strike pitches.

Edit: 7

Second edit: and then a homer. Wow. With a runner in scoring position and two outs, no less (albeit with a 5-run lead).

Should Blake, gasp, get some All-Star consideration? Besides A-Rod and Lowell, I can't think of an AL 3B having a better uyear.

I wouldn't call that quality, but it was work. More work than it should have been

Mastny's stuff was overrated last year, and this season he's proving it.

At least the Tribe snagged 2 out of 3 from the pesky Royals. Great hitting by Blake, Gutz and Barfield. Another outstanding effort by Carmona, who should get serious consideration for the AS game.

Yeah, unlike Buff, I am NOT a big Mastny fan. I think he is a dime a dozen reliever. He has looked good this year at times, but he mostly has looked so good because guys like Davis, Hernandez and Cabrera have been so bad.

According to BP's VORP stat, Blake is third in the AL as a 3B with 15.0 VORP. (Beltre is 4th at 10.3, and he has no shot, but Glaus is 5th at 9.9.) So, yes, he should be considered, but probably not actually chosen. He wouldn't be a bad choice, though.

The danger: Beltre is Seattle's third-best hitter, behind Suzuki and Johjima. Johjima has no shot, but Suzuki might. If you had to choose one Mariner, who would it be? Putz, Morrow, and Sherrill are all good relief pitchers, and Putz has been a closer ... but it's prolly Suzuki.
