Surprised no comments, at least not that I have seen. I am very interested in what the true baseball peeps have to say.

10 year deal to a 30 year old 50 pound overweight alcoholic that can't move left or right in the field anymore. What could go wrong?

Timing makes little sense. They had Miggy through 2015 and nobody was giving him this kind of money in two years. Ilitch doesn't really care about money with the Tigers, though. This is his toy. As Piper said in another thread, he's also in his 80s. Just wants to win one before he croaks and that'll be before Miggy falls apart.

Overall, I'd say Miggy's worth it through the first six or seven years. It'll become an albatross in his late 30s when he's a very expensive DH. 10/292 at 6.5M per win (inflation over length of contract) means 45 wins over the 10-year span. 5.2 or more last five seasons per Fangraphs. Should be around market value depending how fast his decline is.

But Dave Cameron wrote all about this and he's got a less optimistic take: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/miguel-c ... -contract/

The contract is worth more than the city of Detroit.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but if you're a billionaire, and likely dead by the time this contract starts to turn bad, letter rip.

For octogenarians, "win now" is imperative.

Nothin' much better in the game than watching that guy hit. Owner said, guarantee that guy is here till I'm gone.

I think ya'll are shortsighted when you think about billionaire octogenarian health. These guys drink virgin South American blood for breakfast. They are gonna live far past the 100's kids.

Gene Autry lived about as long as any of em - and he made it out of octagenarianism by about a year. Mike Illitch, who's had recent health problems, ain't outliving that contract.
