Eric Wedge: Worst Manager Ever?

Unread postby skatingtripods » Wed Mar 05, 2014 10:35 am

Adam Darowski's(@baseballtwit)Twitter bio says this: Baseball saberhistorian. Creator of the @HallOfStats. Chair of the @SABR Nineteenth Century Overlooked Legend Committee.

Just to set a little bit of credibility.

Two years ago, he wrote a piece for Beyond the Box Score entitled "Manager Wins Above Expectancy" which is here http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2012/3 ... expectancy

Using that criteria, including the 2013 season, Darowski updated his manager chart on his personal site: http://darowski.com/hall-of-wwar/expectancy/

Last on the list, Eric Wedge. The criteria, for those of you who can't or don't want to look was Expected Wins according to Pythagorean W-L (calculated by run differential), Wins Above Expectancy (so # of wins above Pyth W-L), Expected Wins according to team WAR, Wins Above Expectancy based on WAR, and then the Total sum of Wins Above Expectancy.

In his 1296 games, Wedge's Wins Above Expectancy is -79.5, over 10 more than the next lowest, Gene Mauch. FWIW, Hargrove is ninth-worst at -44.2.

Thoughts?

I suggest a furthering of this study by taking this data and comparing each of these managers against their exact same career - only replaced by a cigar store Indian.

My guess would be that for each ten years of their careers the CSI's WAR is off by no more than 2 games either way.

Mr. Buffum is alive and well.

No worries there.

What's it say about a GM that would pick him to run the club?

This study is pointless without including park factor, any sort of normalization for team defense, and average wind velocity split over half innings coupled with pitcher GB/FB ratios.

Do they teach nothing in school these days?

You could stop here on this one.

Lotta of good analytics out there that even pique my interest and that I look at.

This one is fucking stupid.

End of story.

I'm still pretty certain a team managed by Eric Wedge in the city of Cleveland got to one win away from playing in a World Series. He seemed pretty much like most managers. When he had good players having good seasons he won games and when he didn't he lost games. I think he was more like "just a manager"...very far from both best AND worst.

Eric Wedge sucks.

Shapiro sucks.

Russell Branyan is one of the greatest of all time.

Mirabelli butchered out drafts: Dan Denham, Mike Conroy, Jason Cooper, JD Martin, Micah Schilling, Beau Mills, etc etc etc

no mention of grinders or grinding it out
Galley Boys are slop on top of a so-so burger and a bun you coulde get from a Covneninet food mart generic pack. They the Antoine Joubert of burgers; soft, sloppy, oozing grease and cheap sauce and extremely overrated by a biased fan base. Proof that if you throw enough cheap sauce shit on a burger you still can't overcome the lame burger. -JB
