Defensive Metrics Just Got Much Better

Unread postby motherscratcher » Sat Mar 01, 2014 4:31 pm

It's no secret that the current best metrics used to analyze defense still lag far behind what is currently available for offense. But MLB Advanced Media is putting in a new tracking system that will give us all sorts of new data. It tracks batted ball speed and hang time as well as the distance of the fielder from the ball, his acceleration, his speed, and how efficient his path was.

Just look at the example they have for a play Jason Heyward made last year. It is pretty awesome. Pause the video as new information appears on the screen. I really hope this stuff will be available to be broadcast during the games.

ETA: They say that it should be in all ballparks by 2015.

I guess this is just quantifying the same things I went over in practice with outfielders last week- footwork is important and every step counts.

Now those things will have numbers to back them up. Are all these metrics getting rid of scouts? Not completely, but one guy in a room can watch a week's worth of games in an afternoon. Less people, less travel.

I would imagine this technology will increase the money-saving outfield platoon plans of most teams. Historically it's been RHP/LHP splits, but now there will be a defensive element to it.

I will also be awesome to see who is at the bottom of the defensive list. What's Ryan Garko doing nowadays?
