WOOOOOOOO! OUR FIRST TRADE. WE'RE BUYERS!

Tribe acquires backup SS John McDonald.

Places Brett Myers on the 60-day DL. Unfortunate waste of 7M. Liked the signing, hated the amount.

Tom Hamilton will have an orgasm when he gets the news. Full disclosure: Ol' Johnny boy is batting .065 this year with an OPS of .268. Should fit right in.
Bottom 4th: Cleveland
- J. Kipnis grounded out to shortstop
- A. Cabrera doubled to deep left
- N. Swisher doubled to center, A. Cabrera scored
- J. Giambi doubled to deep right center, N. Swisher to third, N. Swisher out at home
- J. Giambi caught stealing, catcher to third

1 run, 3 hits, 0 errors

I don't really know why they picked him up as whatever he had is pretty used up but all the same, I've always liked him. I suppose it would be nice to be able to end his career as an Indian.

Because Juan Diaz blows despite being 25 and they figure if he's gonna blow less then he needs to play everyday in AAA as opposed to sit up here.

And there's no one else down there who's better than Juan effing Diaz.

To piggyback Peeker's reasoning, they only need McDonald until Cabrera comes back as a late inning defensive replacement and a pinch runner that isn't wasting a player, since only Raburn, Gomes, and Diaz were on the bench. Plus, with Carrasco taking up a roster spot with his suspension, McDonald can play 2B/SS/3B. Diaz was only SS and Raburn blows at 2B.

Re: Diaz- I know some opposing teams liked him in spring training. If he indeed would be exposed as AAAA or whatever if he played in the majors, I wonder what kind of return they could get for him right now.

Probably next to nothing. Some A-ball prospect with a low ceiling or a middling relief prospect. .255/.311/.364/.675 in MiLB don't get you a whole lot, even if a guy can field.

So in the off season, why would they protect a Diaz and not a McGuiness? Relative lack of depth up the middle?

McGuiness was a rule 5 pick from the Rangers - they couldn't protect him on the 40-man - he needed to stay on the Indians 25-man roster all season - completely different situation.

Ah, I mistakenly was thinking he'd been claimed by Texas from Cleveland, not vice versa.

You could have gone with McDade instead of McGuiness and had a valid point.

Kept Diaz for insurance purposes. Aviles is the only backup SS that's Major League caliber. Lindor and Paulino need to be playing every day and aren't ready for the Show anyway.

We'd be up shit creek if Aviles got hurt with Cabrera out. 2-3 weeks of Diaz/McDonald would be horrifying and it's too small of a window to force a trade for a SS and give up some of our assets.

Shoot, a SS such as that is known by old-school NL guys as "a ballplayer."

(not completely kidding)

And just like that, the second Jhonny Mac era ends...

The Indians have designated John McDonald for assignment and activated Asdrubal Cabrera from the disabled list, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (on Twitter).

The 38-year-old McDonald appeared in eight games for the Tribe but only recorded seven plate appearances. He went hitless in those seven trips to the plate and has collected just two hits in 38 at-bats this season between the Pirates and Indians. For his career, McDonald is just a .236/.274/.327 hitters. He's been an outstanding defender at shortstop according to both UZR and DRS.

Might as well retire and be a roving minor league fielding instructor.

He actually had a pretty impressive career (longevity) for being a defensive specialist.

Don't worry, he'll be back with the Indians before the season ends.

How much cash is a John McDonald worth?

Chris was quoted as saying that JMac still wants to play, but the day that is over he has a job.

Perhaps after the all-star break JMac will join Lindor in Akron as his personal instructor. Not that the kid needs it, but I'm sure JMac could show him some of the finer points of playing professional baseball.
