Why root for Cleveland Sports teams?..from a fan

Unread postby schwartz412 » Thu Aug 02, 2012 8:18 am

I have been a fan of ALL Cleveland sports teams since my birth in 1954. This is 58 years of frustration. Even in the best years we can see teams get to the World Series, or an NBA final and not be able to finish. I am asking why should I continue? Why not root for another team, like perhaps the Angels or Cardinals? Why not the Patriots or the Thunder? These fans have hope. I have tried to be optimistic with the start of each season only to see more heartache. I gave up watching football before when Modell moved the team. Why spend money on a bad product? If I start rooting for another team I at least know that when they come to Cleveland I have a chance to see them win. If I go to watch the Indians, Browns, or Cavs, it is not likely.

There are a lot of other cities that come close to matching our rather poor track record. San Diego may be a much nicer place to live, but they haven't won anything. Seattle may have won one NBA championship 34 years ago, but they don't have much to show either. Atlanta..one World Series win (guess who they beat), but have nothing much else and have lost two NHL franchises, which has to be some kind of record. The list goes on.

You are a Cleveland fan, I would guess, because you grew up in the area, just like most of us. If I had been raised in Baltimore, I would be an O's fan. Had I grown up in St. Louis, it would have been the Cards.
But being reared in Cleveland, it was the Browns and Indians.

I doubt anyone would willingly choose the Indians and Browns as their favorites.

I personally am a saddist and love the torture.

On a serious note though, for me I thank God I am only a fan of one Cle team. Im not sure how you guys deal with 2 or even 3.

I know you meant 'sadist' but 'saddist' is funny and applicable on many levels too.

I didn't pick my favorite team. My favorite team picked me. I can honestly say I cannot see myself rooting for any other team or city. Just wouldn't feel right

And when the time comes when the Tribe finally wins a WS; next year, 10 years, or when I'm old and gray and on my death bed... one WS win would be more sweet than being a NY/BOS fan.

Today's loss is just another example of what I am talking about. I refuse to give my money to see this team play (or not play, depending on how you want to look at it.

My parents brought me up to watch the Browns and Indians, that's what you do.

I will never forgive them.

I was born two years after 1964.

San Diego- shitty fanbase. Seattle- shitty fans- yea they want their hoops team back, and they have crazy fans when the Seahawks are competing. Atlanta- Braves definitely have some solid fans, but who wouldn't be, they've been solid for decades now.

Everyone knows Cleveland has some of the most passionate fans in the country when it comes to our 3 major franchises, and most everyone respects that. People being fans of teams outside of their market is something I've never ever been able to understand.

The Tribe's done for, so I focus my attention to the Browns, and with football being my bread and butter, it really doesn't matter how bad they're doing, I still follow with the same amount of enthusiasm.

I swear to God I'd cut off my left pinky before I'd ever become a steeler fan.
