(a) A regulation game consists of nine innings, unless extended because of a tie score, or shortened (1) because the home team needs none of its half of the ninth inning or only a fraction of it, or (2) because the umpire calls the game. Just checked the rule book: -

a) A game shall become a suspended game that must be completed at a future date if the game is terminated for any of the following reasons:

I think he pretty much has to. Wheeler can't loosen up like that then sit for 90 minutes or whatever.

After reading the rules (twice ) all I can say is umpires suck! Had they called the game before the Sox had a runner on base we would win in the cast of a called game. Since they had two sox on bases and they have a chance to add runs we HAVE to finish this game. AND we're no longer winning. CRAP!
