I always had a soft spot for him. He was one tough customer. When he pitched for Kinston, he was sitting in the seats directly behind home plate, charting pitches, and a foul ball went right through the screen and nailed him, at an incredibly fast pace, right in the chest. He went to the locker room and I was called to examine him. I could see the imprint of the ball on his chest wall...I had never seen anything like it. I thought he should get a chest Xray, but he wanted to go back and continue charting pitches. As I said, one tough customer.
