Gary Carter Dead at 57

Unread postby peeker643 » Thu Feb 16, 2012 6:51 pm

Died of cancer today. Carter was a bad mutha when I was growing up and watching ball. I was at the '81 All Star game when he hit a couple HRs and won the MVP award for that game.

Legendary red-ass and leader and tremendous defensive player.

57 years old.

I saw you.

I just was smarter then and ignored you completely.

I said to myself, "That kid is going to grow up to be one, Grade-A asshole", and I walked away.

That AS game was actually the first game after the strike that year, if I recall correctly.

It was the first game back from the strike.

My family won tickets thru the lottery system - upper deck behind the dish - row z. Saw thru the chain link behind our seats then vice president Bush drive in.

Also saw a kid break his wrist during BP courtesy of a Dave Parker missle skipping off the top of the old Municipal bullpen.

And I remember Jim Frey running out of players, forcing the pitcher to make the last out for the AL.

Carter was a great player, and on top of that, he rocked the perm mullett. Gotta be a HOFer to get away with that.

I was also at that All-Star game. As an aspiring catcher as a young ball player, Carter was one of my baseball idols.

e0y2e3 found this on twitter yesterday. Tremendous highlight. Like I told Lee, Carter was always capable of making the moment about him, but this is cool to watch. And you can see a young Manny Acta late in the video:
