Yankees inquire about Byrd availability

Unread postby consigliere » Sat May 05, 2007 11:38 pm

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Yankees inquired about the Indians' Paul Byrd this week.

With Fausto Carmona looking ready and Adam Miller waiting in the wings, Byrd could have been expendable this spring. However, Cliff Lee went down and missed the first month and now the Indians are going to be without Jake Westbrook for at least a few weeks, making a Byrd trade impractical. Maybe the Indians would be open to the possibility in July, but they'd want immediate help in return and there isn't much the Yankees could spare. Kyle Farnsworth just wouldn't be enough.

how many runs has he given up lately in his start 2 each? 3 or 4 max?

maybe one bad game.........

hes doing so much better thn the "god" jake westbrook and you want to trade him? Thank god you are not the GM.

people judge byrd and other players on their past way to much (whether its good or bad). Its all about what have you dont for me lately, and lately byrd is AWSOME

His value has hit the ceiling.
Now will be the only time anybody will want him.

I think that Adam Miller and Jason Stanford are ready and able to step in if needed.

I am not opposed to dealing Bryd but do I really want to help the Yanks out in their time of need? Nope

I only deal Bryd to the Yanks if 1) no one in the NL has any interest and 2) the trade is comparable to the heisting of Hafner from the Rangers or Lofton from the Astros.

Trade Byrd and Oldberto for Farnsworth and Myers. Get rid of Jason Davis.

Maybe, but at our own expense? I don't think so.

Timing is everything with a player and trade possibilities like this. He is not the best, not even our best, yet he is not our worst either. He is fulfilling a key role right now for this team, to trade him now amidst uncertainty of players coming back from injuries is suicide IMO.

If Lee gets rolling well and Jake comes back and is just Jake from the past two years then look to unload Byrd in June or July.

Worst case scenario is you hold on to him too long and get "stuck" with him, gee darn getting stuck with a guy pitching well as you head toward the post season. Problems like that are welcome at my doorstep every day of the week.

Clemons is on his way back for the Yanks. We'll see if they still are in need of (or even want) Byrd come July.

I am impressed with the way Byrd has acted and pitched this year. Besides CC and Carmona, he's the only one who has pitched well. He has been fired up ever since the home opener and has used his anger towards that game to fire up his pitches, and, what really gave me respect for him, along with my boss who started the season talking about what a bum he is, was that he was the ONLY FREAKIN guy who volunteered to help out after Westbrook went down. Why would we get rid of someone who has worked hard to improve, and has been doing exceedingly well this season, least of all send him to the Yankees. They've already got their old geezer coming back, take Clemens and leave us our Byrd. His perch is in Cleveland and he will peck away at the teams the rest of the year (that was cheesy and I don't care) Byrd stays. :!: 8) 8-)

I have to get in on this one. No way we can ditch Byrd. Yes his stock may be high right now but who cares. He is pitching fantastic - we're off to a great start. Don't mess with the staff right now. Yeah we got guys waiting in the wings but give me a veteran - a guy who you know what he can and can't do and has some long term results to prove it.

Sowers is a prime example. Last year we brought him up and he was terrific. So far this year he's much more human. You may bring up a guy now with limited MLB experience and he looks good the first pass through the league - second time through he gets exposed. Byrd patched pretty well down the stretch last year and so far this year he's really good. You can never have too many good pitchers and I think it's hard to argue that Byrd isn't a good pitcher right now.

Let's try to hold onto Byrd for the trade deadline. I'm telling you now, if someone else falls apart, we will need Byrd down the stretch.

Let's not rush on trading him just yet; let's see how he performs and how Carmona performs. If they continue to look good, we can get some great players for Byrd and someone else in our bullpen.

No need to move anybody just yet

I'm starting to worry about Sowers

Please stop suggesting trading proven starters for middle relievers.
The bullpen is a crapshoot, and it is an area that is actually panning out for us. To trade Byrd for anyone who is not an everyday position player would be a dumb idea; one that Shapiro thankfully wouldn't entertain

Listen, I've sent you three emails now, literally begging you to stop using these forums to provoke people and make assinine inflamatory statements.

This is your last warning. You're doing nothing but detracting from the forums.

If you have nothing better to do than troll message forums, I'd suggest taking up a hobby of some sort.

You will not get banned for posts like this:

1. i said trading byrd is dumb because when the injuries hit hard u will b wishign we had him

You could get banned for posts like this:

you guys are disgusting

It is pretty simple. Don't post to inflame. Post your take, provide reasons and you will be more than welcome. In this case, I agree with your opinion 100%, but find it hard to post agreeing with you because of the way you write things.

If you want to change your user name, let me know.

And for the record, no one here wants to moderate, or ban anyone. It's been really 16 months without one incident. And the forums are starting to really take off ... thanks in large part to a great core group of knowledgable and laid back regular contributors.

And on your other point, I earmark some money each month to give away in the form of prizes for board members. People like it, and it helps encourage people to check the forums. It's my money, I can't see why anyone else would care really.

We're not going to put together this elaborate set of forum rules here. Basically, just don't be an asshole. That's my only rule. Attack people's stance using fact and reason ... and don't attack the people.

No. You got "attacked" because of your tone and provoking nature. In your original response saying things like "you guys are disgusting" and "you wil be crying" warrants the replies you got.
