INDIANS ACTIVATE DH TRAVIS HAFNER
FROM THE 15-DAY DISABLED LIST

OF Travis Buck Optioned to AAA Columbus

CLEVELAND, OH – The Cleveland Indians today announced the activation of DH TRAVIS HAFNER from the 15-day disabled list. To allow room on the 25-man roster the Indians optioned OF TRAVIS BUCK to AAA Columbus.

Hafner was placed on the 15-day DL on May 18 with a strained right oblique after feeling discomfort in his right rib cage area during batting practice prior to that night’s game in Chicago. At the time of his injury he was hitting .345 (39-113) with 8 doubles, 5HR and 22 RBI in 32 games (.409OB/.549SLG/ .958OPS) and ranked 3rd in the American League in batting average, 4th in on-base % and 5th in slugging % entering play of May 18. He appeared in 2 games on a rehab assignment at AA Akron on June 14 & 16 and was 3 for 6 w/a 2B, 2RS and 1 walk for the Aeros.

Buck has hit .226 (21-93) in two stints with Cleveland this year (5 2B, 2HR, 8RBI, 29 games).

He'll bat fourth. I'd actully like to see Choo bat 3rd with Hafner protecting him. Chop has swung the bat better the last couple of games and maybe he is starting to turn it around. I would also like to see Brantley at 6 or 7 to get some production at the bottom of the order.

Hopefully he can help turn this offense around. Just his presence alone should help Choo and Carlos see better pitches.

Silver lining: we now have someone who can knock in Brantley and ACab after they get on base. Thank God Pronk's back.

Just curious and maybe it has to do with lefty vs. righty, as well as options left and ease of a situation, but why not ship out Kearns instead of Buck? Maybe it's because even though he isn't great, Buck did hit a clutch homer to help beat Cincy in game 2 of the series. I like Buck...he's not the typical garbage we usually have at corner of. Maybe I don't see it, but isn't he -- just from a productivity standpoint -- better than Kearns? Also, can't he play a little 1b? I would have almost rather shipped out La Porta. I missed tonight's game but heard LaPorta got hurt. X rays were negative? If he went on the dl, we'd have to get Buck back, no? And option 2...why not send Phelps back?

I know how the position player thing works, but it sucks that Everett is still on the team and Buck is back in AAA. It's similar to optioning out one of Dellichaels and keeping Mike Rouse around simply because of where he plays. I guess you can't use the mentality of ship out the worst player when Hafner arrives. BUT, man is it great to see Pronk in the lineup.
