Awesome. Just what we needed. Distractions aren't good.

Will the folks asking for Kearns' release after his DUI say the same here?

If I were in the FO, I'd be using this as an opportunity to sell Choo on staying with the Indians. I mean, there is nothing about this on ESPN.com yet. Think that'd be the case if he were in NY?

Those cops are dicks. But the level of fail here is high. Choo's got to learn that in the States, you NEVER, EVER, EVER, talk to a cop. They'll just make things 10 times worse for everyone involved.

Is a cop allowed to just drive the drunk guy home/force him to call a cab in that scenario instead of cherrypicking a DUI? If so, would have been nice here.

Yeah, total dicks, I mean I'm sure he came across as being totally sober, not knowing where he lived, probably not even realizing he was speaking to the cops, then blowing a BAL of .2 when pulled over.

Maybe they just should have let him drive around until he killed somebody.

They weren't dicks, they were doing their effing job.

No, that's what taxi cabs are for when you realize you've had too much to drink.

I've heard a handful of stories where people had the cop let them go, but I'm pretty sure that none of them were on the verge of blowing a .20. Generally, the stories I've heard, if true, happen out in very rural areas.

I'm sure some cops have pulled worse stunts than letting somebody go on a DUI or getting them a ride home.

In this instance, as much as it sucks for the Indians organization, Choo, his teammates, and his family, props to the officers for doing their jobs. They very easily could have let Choo go because of who he is and created a far more dangerous situation.

I'd never condone letting him drive once you see that he's drunk and it's very difficult to argue with a cop doing his job. But taking him home/letting him get a cab (and issuing him a subsequent stern warning) wouldn't hurt anyone if it was at all permitted. If anything, you can argue that it's safer than letting a drunk person get behind the wheel, even if it's only for a few seconds.

The full story makes a little more sense.

http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2011/05/cleveland_indians_of_shin-soo.html

Basically, Choo asked for directions, drove off, and only then did the cop notice he was swerving.

Bad Choo. Driving drunk is stupid, no-good, terrible.

But I still hope you go 2-4 in tonight's game. :hide:

Used to happen all the time. DEM425 would tell you that. But the times have changed, MADD has made sure that there's a punitive element to getting caught, etc. Believe me, I played ball with a cop that pulled up behind Browns FB Tim Manoa on RT2 in Euclid, got to the car, roused a passed-out Manoa from a drunken sleep in a running car (but in park mind you) and arranged a ride home for him after looking at him and saying, "Been there before myself buddy. Let's get ya home."

So because Choo is the 3 hitter for the Tribe who is off to a 20-8 start, he should be given a free pass for driving at 2.5 times the legal limit?

Pretty sure anyone who is suggesting this has never been had a family member a victim of drunk driving.

And I have driven drunk, so I am not being holier than thou or any of that. I also know I am one lucky MFer that I never a)hurt someone else b)hurt myself c) got caught.

Never a free pass, I was just talking about a preemptive move by the cop to keep him from getting behind the wheel. But now that I read the actual story, apparently the cop didn't even notice he was drunk until giving him directions then pulling him over twice. Choo got what he deserved, dumb decision.

Shoot. I was hoping that he could have used "driving while asian" as a plausible excuse for erratic driving. But they probably have him here if he talked to them first and was all Donger.
