i gotta believe they can win at least one of the next two games against the motor city kitties and set the teams all-time record for most wins in april. who woulda thunk it??? certainly not me, but i must say i am pleasantly surprised!!!

the indians are playing some very good ball this april for the first time in a long time, which is certainly a far cry from the way things were from 2003-2009 under eric "the genius" wedge. thank gawd that vapid waste of bench space is no longer in the indians dugout. in manny i trust!!!

the question now is at what point do you stop saying "it's early" and actually start to look at this team as actual contenders???

while i just can't help but look at them through tribe-colored glasses at the present time, i have to temper my optimism with the memory of 2008 when the indians were in first place as late as may 15th that year before falling off the face of the earth in june and july, resulting in the trade of cc sabathia, et al, before rallying down the stretch to finish with an 81-81 record.

call me crazy, but i just don't see this team as having that type of "june swoon" and it all starts with that guy they got sitting on the bench now. in manny i trust!!!

so can the indians keep the momentum going and actually win the division and make the playoffs, let alone win the whole big enchilada??? we can only hope. go tribe!!!

One thing the fast start does is force you to begin to change your calculation of how the season might progress from a personnel standpoint. We went in thinking guys like O. Cabrera and Hannahan were placeholders that might well be spun off by the All-Star break for prospects with their spots being taken by Chiz and Kipnis or Phelps.

That could still happen, especially with Cabrera. But the intangibles and experience of Hannahan and Cabrera start to figure more into your thinking if we're still in the hunt in July. At the very least, there's no reason to rush a rookie like Chiz into the every day lineup. The makeup of the 25-man will change, I'm sure. Who would miss Kearns and Everett, for example, if they moved on in favor of younger, longer-term guys for the bench. But the longer we're in it, the less we can afford to be future-oriented at the expense of the here and now.

And nobody saw that coming a month ago.
