I was just about to mention that. It's great to see Hafner getting some respect from the opposing teams again. He will be crucial for us this year if we are going to do anything.

Hate to keep comparing Nasty Masty to Buchholz but I remember the Tribe preferred Buchholz and settled for Justin. They've both pitched today (Buchholz gave up 3 runs on 90 pitches in 5+ innngs) and the one we didn't get looks like this after three starts:

I moved from the bleachers down to the RF lower deck after the 2nd inning. As much as I enjoyed hearing that Milton Brantley was leading off and that Jackie Robinson was the black guy who managed the Indians, I wanted to enjoy the game instead of creating a hit list in my head.

That said, 9-4. Hafner hit that ball a ton. Masterson was very good yet again. Asdrubal looks like a changed man. Even if Orlando hits .240 with 4 HR and 25 RBI, the effect he has had on Asdrubal is worth everything.

I was one of the walkups. 5,000 of those had to be in the bleachers. Great energy in the crowd tonight. Completely the opposite of the games last year. Even when they were playing ok last year the crowds were lackluster in attitude. If this team can just not implode, this is going to be a fun season. We'll see.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if it was WELL over that. My buddy had tickets to the media section with 1 caveat, he had 4 tickets and there were 5 of us. I got voted to buy an upper reserve to get in and I ahd to wait until the 4th inning to get in. Gate A was as swamped as I have ever seen it in the height of the summer.

Great to see the nice walk-up. Partly due to an 8-4 start...partly due to dollar dogs. Who cares? It's all good.

Encouraging AB's for LaPorta tonight. Looked more relaxed at the plate. Outside of Masterson, it was the highlight of the evening for me.

Really fun atmosphere tonight, I enjoyed it. There was a party type vibe in the stands that reminded me of the 90's (on a much smaller scale obviously). And yes, Gate A was an absolute mob scene. I got lucky and found a scalper who sold me a seat for $10 on my walk over. Otherwise, I would have waited 30-40 minutes easily. All the concession stands were jammed too. A bunch of beer vendors were just posting up on the first base concourse because so many people were coming up to them to avoid the lines. It's still so early but the crowds should get better and better as long as the Tribe stay within a few games of first.

Marson was in the Lee deal and most knowledgeable Sox fans liked Masterson more than Clay, due to mental make-up alone. Bucholz has that entitled fragile side that is scary, a slow start like this has the potential to ruin a ridiculously talented pitcher for the year when they have the fragile make-up he does.

I thought he looked pretty good for his first appearance.

He's a guy who gives up a ton of walks for a reliever and he was throwing strikes last night. one of the grounder got past Cabrera somehow and should have been gobble3d up and then there was the dribbler to Everett that he couldn't do anything about.

Marson and Hagadone part of that deal (and Bryan Price).

Listening to writers and a few others in the press box last night there's not only buzz Grady will be back on the roster this weekend but also that many will not be surprised at all to see Hagadone in the bullpen before the season ends.

Way too early to genuinely ask, but given Masterson's last eight starts and if Marson is a solid backup backstop w/Hagadone throwing 98 from the left side out of the pen, a lot of people might have to reverse stream on the Victor trade.

Not sure where Bryan Price fits in right now as he's young too. And Boston didn't even retain Victor.

Sayin', if Masterson has 'figured it out' and can replicate that delivery. stay down in the zone with that movement, well, shit, that'd be alright.

I was thinking the same thing last night. The big trades from a couple years ago are starting to look better. If Masterson can stay in the rotation for the next 5 years I think it's a win regardless of what the other two prospects give you as VMart will probably begin declining in the next couple years.

As for the Lee deal; if you end up with 4 guys on the big club, with one being in the rotation, I think that ends up being a win as well. And I really like Marson. With him and Santana, barring injury, you are set a C for the next 7-10 years.

Are the Red Sox paying about $49 million more than the Indians are for the same pitcher?

Masterson may very well be having the season that Buchholz had last year. It earned Buchholz a $50 million payday.

Consider their career numbers:

Buchholz -- 379.1 IP, 3.80 ERA, 8.4 H/9, .9 HR/9, 3.9 BB/9, 6.9 K/9
Masterson -- 418 IP, 4.16 ERA, 8.8 H/9, .8 HR/9, 3.8 BB/9, 7.3 K/9

Masterson is six months younger.

Masterson has benefited this year from improved infield defense.

If Masterson enjoys a 2011 like Buchholz's 2010, is he in line for a $50 million contract? Perhaps the Indians should begin thinking about a Fausto-like dead for Masterson. I believe Masterson is eligible for arbitration after this season, though under team control through 2014. So before his ERA and W/L record start looking more like Buchholz's, the Tribe should ink him to a long-term deal that does not look like Buchholz's.

The fact that Victor is a DH at this point in his career -- with a team different than Boston -- really makes the trade a winner for the Indians. I can't imagine trying to get more than a MOR starter for a DH who hits ~20HR with a ~.370 OBP in hindsight.

It just seemed like such a rip-off at the time because the Indians were trading a catcher who hit 20 jacks and got on base. As a DH or 1B, the Indians got a commensurate haul to his value. And that stands even if Masterson ends up reverting a tad.

I knew that. Had a brain burp and forgot it. ALL those trades from 2009 keep getting mixed up in my head and I was too lazy to double-check before I posted.

It's tough for practically anyone not named Beckett to pitch in Boston right now. Beckett is a hard-ass and can put up with the media and fans up here. Lester's toughening up. The other three? I can't believe how much they pay for slop. If Buchhold can learn to ignore the circus around here he should be OK with his stuff. You have to be tough mentally to play in Bahstun and Beckett has a real "eff you" attitude. Hate the guy.

Agree. A few years ago there was talk of moving Grady down in the order anyway. Why not do it now? Brantley is the Tribe's leadoff hitter of the future. Keep him in place.

No reason to put Grady back at the top. Brantley is clearly the better option at this point. Grady's pop will play better further down in the lineup. Table setters are not the issue with this lineup, if there is one. It's consistent run producers, Pronk's surge notwithstanding.
