Tribe's Final Roster (Pestano is In!!)

Unread postby peeker643 » Mon Mar 28, 2011 4:01 pm

I don't understand this. How did Vinnie Pestano make the club when Chad Durbin also made the club?

6 weeks ago it was the end of his lifelong dream.

And Herrmann made it too!! Did Durbin die?

OMG OMG OMG Germano made it too. :nanner: :dingle: :woot:

How did it happen? Could it have been through normal baseball attrition where people get hurt or suck?

BTW- No Nix and no Valbuena either from what I saw. As for citation or a link, blow me. You can wait.

And Mr. Pestano, congrats on your kid making the opening day roster. Thrill of a lifetime for both of ya and I'm happy it worked out. Salud.

Laporta, ACab, OCab, Hannahan, Everett, Santana, Marson, Hafner

Choo, Kearns, Buck, Brantley, Duncan

Fausto, Carrasco, Masterson, Tomlin, Talbot

C Perez, R Perez, Sipp, Germano, Pestano, Herrmann and Durbin

MLB Rumors.com mentioned that Cleveland was looking to deal Nix since he didn't make the opening day roster.

The Adam Everett era has begun here in Cleveland.

I was surprised to see Marson make the team. I figured he'd be getting lots of ABs in Columbus this year.

Nope. Phillips and Nix didn't get there. Can't tell you how glad I am not to have the early part of April ruined by watching Luis Valbuena hit.

I'd rather shovel wet snow than see that shit.

I seem to remember someone (this guy) saying that Pestano was going to make the roster whether Durbin was on the team or not. He's good. I really think he's going to do a nice job for this team this year. And its fun to watch him run in from the bully.

Besides the pitching and stuff, he's a master chef. Its always nice to have one of those around.

All busting of stones aside, I am happy for Vinnie to get his shot. I was just not of the opinion that the Durbin signing would prevent it. If Vinnie can pitch and gets his shot and, most importantly, gets ML hitters out then he'll have a spot til he's older and grayer.

Pulling for him.

Sincerely, congrats.

Kudos to the Tribe for bringing the best players north. Could have easily sent Marson down to AAA ... went with Nix/Valbuena instead of Everett. Stuck with Jensen and gave him another shot cause they had to pay him anyway.

Roster gets a shot in the arm in 2 weeks when we get Grady, Donald, and Joe Smiff back.

My kingdom for a good start.

This decision tells me that they don't think Marson can get any better. If he had room to get better, specifically at the plate, he'd play every day in Columbus again. But, they clearly don't think highly of his future if they want him to play once, maybe twice, a week.

I kept forgetting about Germano because he wasn't on the 40-man after last year and I didn't figure they'd want to make room for him. He's very serviceable in a long relief/6th inning role. No complaints here with him.

I just hope one of Germano/Herrmann/Pestano can step up enough to bridge the gap to the lefties and Durbin. Because that 6th inning will be crucial for the Indians in every single game this year. 3/5 of our rotation struggle to get out of the 6th. They can win/lose a lot of games depending on how the 6th and 7th innings go this year.

Would like to have seen Nix on the roster instead of Everett. I guess Nix can blame his poor ST stats of 6 for 34 hitting. Cant make the team batting like that. Just ask Marson and his 4 for 28 hitting.

David Segui was the shit. He is up there with Branyan, Sexson, BP, Belle, Thome, Mike Jackson, and Guthrie.

The Casey Blakes, Jamie Carrolls, and Bill Selbys of the world couldnt even pick up Segui's jock strap.

From CBS preseason power rankings:

Question: Why does this front office continue to receive such glowing notices for its work? Have beat writers and national scribes been swayed by the team's succulent press-box delicacies? Hypnotized under the spell of Chris Antonetti's cold, inviting hazel eyes?
Reason for optimism: If you tilt your head a certain way, you can see a decent offensive core forming (Santana/Choo/Cabrera/Brantley/Sizemore/Chisenhall).
Reason for pessimism: The pitching, which is as flaky as it is low-ceiling'd. As for Matt "The Door" LaPorta, he has joined Jeremy Reed, Andy Marte and Dallas McPherson as part of the "Why Prospect Rankings Can Only Be Taken So Seriously" traveling exhibit of ebullience gone astray. Coincidentally enough, the sideshow has a stop scheduled in Justin Smoak's home town.
Outlook: Someday, son. Someday.

I think the Marson decision was because they didn't want to have to make another corresponding move on the 40-man roster. He'd probably be better served getting AAA AB's every day, and he'll likely end up in Columbus at some point in 2011, but they already had to clear spots for Buck, Hanahan etc.

I don't understand why anyone would be surprised about Marson. Did the Indians sneak another catcher onto the 40 man when I wasn't looking? As far as I know, the only catchers on the 40 are Santana and Marson. What other options were there?

Earlier I was kind of expecting them to sign the 2011 equvalent of Red Markman, whoever that may be. When they didn't the catchign was sort of etched in stone right?

Who else is even in the organization? Seriously, I can't think of who will be catching in AAA right now.

In other news, the Jayson Nix era is now officially over. Dealt to Toronto for the proverbial 'cash considerations'

Lou Marson and Adam Everrett are thanking their lucky stars that Jason Donald got hurt.

Had Donald not gotten hurt he would be the 3B and Hannahan the utility guy, meaning Everrett is out of a job. Also, not having to add Everrett to the 40-man would allow them the room to add a catcher and therefore send Marson to Columbus. I think when Donald comes back that's what we may eventually see, and they DFA Everrett and send Marson out (use Everrett's spot for a catcher).

So really the only two surprises to me were Everrett and Marson. Marson being the big one.

Is Marson the best backup catcher candidate on the team? Absolutely. But to me that is way too short-sighted. Kid is just 24 years old and we have pretty much given way to any further development as a hitter to just pigeon hole him into that role now.

So what happens if Santana gets hurt again? Now we have that "backup" become our starter....when maybe if we gave him the time to work out his issues at the plate playing everyday he could become more respectable and hold his own there. Or maybe not.

No guarantee that sending Marson to Columbus would solve anything, but catchers take time to develop and still being young he could use most of this season to work out some of the issues at the plate. Playing two times a week in Cleveland and working in the cages is not going to help. So given the choice I send him to Columbus to see if it is productive because right now having him ride pine 5 days a week does nothing for him and he pretty much stays what he is.

I guess I am more for continued growth and increasing value. Both things which would be possible sending him to Columbus. Starting him in Cleveland stunts both his growth and lowers his value.

Last year's early season miscues aside, he's shown that he's a major-league caliber catcher, it's his bat that needs to improve for him to be a real option as a starter. We'll see how things play out.

Jason Donald is the clear loser here because the 3B job was his to lose, and pretty much his ticket to increasing his value with this and other organizations. This is a big set-back for him that could easily pigeon-hole him as a utility guy going forward. I'm probably in the minority here, but I think if he gets the chance to settle into a position instead of being bounced around, his hitting would improve. I think he'll end up as a solid big-league 2B for someone in the near future, just probably not here.

"Jason Donald is the clear loser here"

Not so fast. Let's say Donald is ready to go in three weeks. Let's say Hannahan is hitting .195. They cut Hannahan and put Donald in at third. All he's lost is 50-60 at-bats when the weather is freezing and nobody wants to hit anyway. There's still 145 games left to show what he can do, or maybe half that depending on when they bring up Chisenhall.

In fact, I think Donald already lost when he failed to nail down the 2nd base job last year and they brought in O. Cabrera. Now he's just a placeholder for The Chiz with a possible future as a utility infielder.

Anyone have a guess what the opening day lineup will be?

Might be way off base with this.

But how many opening day lineups will have their corner infielders hitting 8 and 9?

And a left fielder hitting seventh.

Championship teams are built with strength up the middle.

Thanks a lot Negative Nancy. How am I supposed to feel good about that lineup now?

Well. You could, um, let's see...you could, nope not that, I know!

You could consider the fact they really are not that much worse the guys hitting above them, so there is good balance!

Didn't Sorrento and Thome hit 7/8 in '94 with Alomar hitting 9th? That isn't too far off.

Good call...the only things missing today are the three guys with about 1200 career homers (AB, Eddie, Manny) hitting in front of those two (in '95 anyway)

Reminds me of the beginning of Major League when they were going over the list of ST invites.
