At C, a platoon of Cesar Geronimo and Garry Maddox (70% of the earth is covered by water; the other 30% is covered by Garry Maddox.)

That's 36 Gold Gloves worth of up-the-middle defense.

Taking the mound on opening day: the Jewish Kid.

Top man out of the pen: the lanky rubber-armed bespectacled Kent Tekulve. A true fireman, not some pretty boy who pitches with a three-run lead in the ninth just to tack on a save.

If any two of a rather sketchy group of power hitters step up and if the Wedge-tastic platooning doesn't blow up in our face, the Jacksons could kick up at least a little dust.

I'm playing in a little stadium called Hunt Ave Grounds. So I picked a bunch of pitching that gave up no HRs (early 1900's) and loaded my lineup with slugging. To set the table I've got Honus "the bonus" Wagner leading off (.355), followed by Nap Lajoie (.378) and Tris Speaker (.388) all of whom are stellar defenders. I follow them by 6 guys who have around 30 HRs. If my pitching can keep the ball in the yard I think I'll win some games.

I just don't want to finish last.

1B - Hank Greenberg
RF - Josh Barfield's dad

All 1 defenders except for Ricky and Lou (both 2's) and Greenberg (who admittedly is a 4). A cannon arm in RF and hoses in LF and behind the plate.
Addie Joss at the top of the rotation with a young El Presidente, Catfish in his prime, and Langston (with Seattle) starting games with Prince Hal Newhouser closing them out.

Although I may tinker with the lineup a little bit, this is what we're looking at right now:

LF - Billy Hamilton (.474 OBP, 3rd all time in SB)
2B - Tubby Scales
CF - Bernie Williams
DH - Albert Belle (50/50 season)
RF - Zack Wheat
1B - Buck Ewing / Dan Driessen Platoon
SS - Dick Lundy
3B - Terry Pendleton
C - Bob Boone

Top 5 in the lineup have OBP > .400. Light on the HR power (except for Belle), but doubles and triples up and down the lineup. Good defense at catcher, short, and center. 3FB leading the rotation.

X-factors: A patchwork bullpen, Scales' questionable defense at second base, and a home park that murders left handed power hitters.

Hal Newhouser was the closer for 2 of my 3 Strat championship teams. Love Hal. Langston and Wallach are other cheaper ATG favorites of mine.

I know...I do it every time.
I take players whose faces I can picture over guys that are probably better and cheaper. I think it makes it easier for me to get attached to a guy (E. Davis is my guess for this season) or have no use for someone (my guess is Whitaker for this season, which will inexplicably make me hate Sweet Lou from this point on) as the season progresses.

Little known fact - there is a statue of Hal Newhouser outside of Comerica.

I went for #'s over name recognition. The only guy I was looking to get was Robbie Alomar v. 1999, because that was one of the greatest seasons I ever witnessed.

Some great teams. Should be a fun league.

The collective defense up the middle in this league is off the charts. Shoulda played in the Baker Bowl and gone with the 10 million dollar pitching staff and 70 mill in bombers.

Like real baseball, preseason, it's just unfathomable to see your team doing anything less than winning 90 games and going to the playoffs.

Can't wait for the season to start. Glad we did this. Hopefully we can keep these leagues rolling. We could do some cool things here on TCF like multiple league tournaments or themed leagues.

Not to sound condescending to anybody with little to no experience in this (I've fielded a dozen teams and won a division twice IIRC, so I'm inexperienced as well), but this week more than any is when you really have yourself convinced YOUR team is the shit. Give it 2 weeks, 3 at most to bring most of us back to reality.

I'm already working on buying another team and getting something going when this one is roughly half over, which for me (and peeker) could be next Wednesday.

Biggio with a 3 run bomb to pace the 10-4 win in the season opener ... then singles home Jim Presley with two down in the bottom of the 9th off Nolan Ryan for a walk off 4-3 win in game two. Then Daddy Wags homers late for the difference in another 4-3 win in game three. Bullpen doesn't surrender a run. Jim Freakin Presley goes 6-12 to be Robin to Biggio's Batman.

Babe Ruth injured for three games though. Will miss tonights series against Al's Cleveland Buckeyes. Lee Lacy gets three starts in right field. Daddy Wags goes into the 3 hole in the lineup.

After getting swept in their first 3 game series, calls are already being made for the head of the manager of Santana's Knees. After the fans opened up the newspaper, they discovered that despite adding 3 Finger Brown on waivers, the team's manager forgot to actually reset the starting lineup.

It didn't help that the Knees lost two one-run games, including the home opener on a ninth inning error. And the third game on a blown save.

...not to mention that the fans are questioning the team's fundamentals coming out of spring training. The alleged "double play combination" of Scales and Lundy is on pace for 270 errors for the season.

The GM protested: "Our scouts said they'd only finish the season with about 53! It's not my fault!"

Fans were still not amused.
