Ha, thanks! Havent done this in a couple years, so praying it pans out better than it did in the past.

Well I have to admit I didn't look too closely at your cards, more just the players and years.

IOW I probably FUDU'd you.

Which reminds me, Peeker your team is sweet, best I've ever seen in ATG.

All my waivers went through. Lineup:

2B Craig Biggio (on his all-world year)
LF Minnie Minoso
RF Babe Ruth
1B Ryan Howard (61 HR year)
DH Leon "Daddy Wags" Wagner
SS Alan Trammell
3B Jim Presley
C Mike Scioscia/Jim Hegan platoon
CF Omar Moreno

Hershiser and Lincecum ... followed by Larry Gura and Ray Caldwell. Dibble to slam the door. Playing at Ebbets Field.

Game on.

At C, Tom Pagnozzi (one half of a platoon w/Terry Steinbach.)

At 2B, Frank White.

At Short, the Wizard.

At C, a platoon of Cesar Geronimo and Garry Maddox (70% of the earth is covered by water; the other 30% is covered by Garry Maddox.)

That's 36 Gold Gloves worth of up-the-middle defense.

Taking the mound on opening day: the Jewish Kid.

Image

Top man out of the pen: the lanky rubber-armed bespectacled Kent Tekulve. A true fireman, not some pretty boy who pitches with a three-run lead in the ninth just to tack on a save.

Image

If any two of a rather sketchy group of power hitters step up and if the Wedge-tastic platooning doesn't blow up in our face, the Jacksons could kick up at least a little dust.

I'm playing in a little stadium called Hunt Ave Grounds. So I picked a bunch of pitching that gave up no HRs (early 1900's) and loaded my lineup with slugging. To set the table I've got Honus "the bonus" Wagner leading off (.355), followed by Nap Lajoie (.378) and Tris Speaker (.388) all of whom are stellar defenders. I follow them by 6 guys who have around 30 HRs. If my pitching can keep the ball in the yard I think I'll win some games.

I just don't want to finish last.

Good luck guys!

CF - Ricky (the young one)
SS - Boudreau
LF - E. Davis (pre-kidney laceration)
1B - Hank Greenberg
RF - Josh Barfield's dad
DH - Harry Baines
2B - Sweet Lou
3B - Wallach
C - Rick Dempsey

All 1 defenders except for Ricky and Lou (both 2's) and Greenberg (who admittedly is a 4). A cannon arm in RF and hoses in LF and behind the plate.
Addie Joss at the top of the rotation with a young El Presidente, Catfish in his prime, and Langston (with Seattle) starting games with Prince Hal Newhouser closing them out.

Although I may tinker with the lineup a little bit, this is what we're looking at right now:

LF - Billy Hamilton (.474 OBP, 3rd all time in SB)
2B - Tubby Scales
CF - Bernie Williams
DH - Albert Belle (50/50 season)
RF - Zack Wheat
1B - Buck Ewing / Dan Driessen Platoon
SS - Dick Lundy
3B - Terry Pendleton
C - Bob Boone

Top 5 in the lineup have OBP > .400. Light on the HR power (except for Belle), but doubles and triples up and down the lineup. Good defense at catcher, short, and center. 3FB leading the rotation.

X-factors: A patchwork bullpen, Scales' questionable defense at second base, and a home park that murders left handed power hitters.

C- Campanella (run if you dare)
1b- 'Today I consider myself..."
2b- 1911 Larry Doyle (no idea)
ss- 1948 Red Sox Vern Stephens
3b- Mike Schmidt's big 1977
LF- '62 Colavito
CF- Hack Wilson's 160rbi
RF- The Straw that Stirs the Drink
DH- Ron LeFlore's 97 stolen bases (I'm working on that spot ;-) ;) )

Concentrated on K's/IP and not giving up the long ball. That three of the fellas came from late 60's or so wasn't an accident.

Fergie Jenkins
Mickey Lolich
Luis Tiant
Bob Knepper
Moose Haas is a long man, Eddie Fisher and Eric Plunk's '88 are set up guys, and Righetti and John Franco for the 8th and 9th

We shall see. But I've already spent way more time on this than I was planning on spending.

I know...I do it every time.
I take players whose faces I can picture over guys that are probably better and cheaper. I think it makes it easier for me to get attached to a guy (E. Davis is my guess for this season) or have no use for someone (my guess is Whitaker for this season, which will inexplicably make me hate Sweet Lou from this point on) as the season progresses.

Little known fact - there is a statue of Hal Newhouser outside of Comerica.

I went for #'s over name recognition. The only guy I was looking to get was Robbie Alomar v. 1999, because that was one of the greatest seasons I ever witnessed.

1. Gary Matthews, DH (.410 OBP)
2. Robbie, 2B
3. Oscar Charleston, CF (32 HR, 50 SB, 1.168 OPS and a 1 defender in CF)
4. Goose Goslin, LF (37/138)
5. Edgar Martinez, 3B (back when he actually played the field...might regret this one)
6. Frank Howard, 1B (36 HR in barely 500 AB)
7. Elmer Smith, RF (.520 SLG and a good arm in RF)
8. Bobby Wallace, SS (1 defender with good speed)
9. Jimmy Archer, C (go ahead, steal...I dare you)

Walter Johnson and Steve Carlton anchoring the pitching staff, with 1990 Randy Myers slamming the door. Lets see what happens.

I went from getting everyone I drafted (..and making an error in my construction and on reading a few cards) to having IIRC 3 guys left from my original recipe.

Some great teams. Should be a fun league.

The collective defense up the middle in this league is off the charts. Shoulda played in the Baker Bowl and gone with the 10 million dollar pitching staff and 70 mill in bombers.

Like real baseball, preseason, it's just unfathomable to see your team doing anything less than winning 90 games and going to the playoffs.

Can't wait for the season to start. Glad we did this. Hopefully we can keep these leagues rolling. We could do some cool things here on TCF like multiple league tournaments or themed leagues.

I was just going to say ^.

Not to sound condescending to anybody with little to no experience in this (I've fielded a dozen teams and won a division twice IIRC, so I'm inexperienced as well), but this week more than any is when you really have yourself convinced YOUR team is the shit. Give it 2 weeks, 3 at most to bring most of us back to reality.

I'm already working on buying another team and getting something going when this one is roughly half over, which for me (and peeker) could be next Wednesday.

Parrish (84) at C
McGwire (90) 1b
Red Shoendienst (57) 2b
Brooks Robinson (65) 3b
Dihigo (Nel) RF, -5, can play every position
Guillen (88) SS
Yaz (67) LF
Junior (97) CF
Willie Horton (68) DH

Tannehill, Plank, Ryan as top 3 starters, all S9* w/ Eck turning out the lights.

No kidding. With no idea what I'm doing, I consider a .500 season to be a success.

But really, with Joey (flex) racking up 150 RBI since he'll always come to bat with somebody on base, I'm destined for 95 wins.

I might even post my draft strategy for you to criticize and mock.

Also he could do it instead of the Cavs recaps, which are just depressing. s

Someone has to.

I beg you.

Peek should have to. His lazy butt is in bed all day anyway.

Also he could do it instead of the Cavs recaps, which are just depressing. s

Back to work tomorrow.

Well, half days at home for two weeks and then full days at home the next two weeks. I haven't seen the office since Dec 30th and won't see it again til Mar 2nd.

But I'm still not doing the recaps ;-) ;)

Hopefully Peeker's team is better than his team name:

In the Action PrplCpdWarriors

Name is more confusing and convoluted than a JB thread title. ;-) ;) :hide: :partyers: :nanner: :spar:

I have a theory that if you're confused enough while signing up that your team name is a muddled mess, well, your team is probably gonna be just as shitty.

I'm an expansion team. I'll figure this out the next session.

Til then, be careful of the Purple Capped Warriors. Don't make me post a team logo.

I was wondering who the hell I was playing first. Peek does have some mashers in Gehrig, Hack Wilson, and Reggie. Plus Schmit. He's gonna score some runs.

Gonna have to. I don't have the pitching or balance you guys do and defense never crossed my mind.

What time do the recaps show up??

Really? A PM is too much to ask now?

I don't have the knowledge, understanding of the game or the technical expertise to dig out of roster hell. I'm thinking you can tell me now or forgot about ever getting your sweatshirt ;-) ;)

Top Starters:

Randy Johnson
Johan Santana

Lineup:

1. Ichiro - RF
2. Cool Papa Bell - CF
3. Stan Musial - 1B
4. Freddie Lindstrom - 3B
5. Billy Herman - 2B
6. Joe Sewell - DH
7. Duffy Lewis - LF
8. Ira Thomas - C
9. Tony Fernandez - SS

Top HR hitter had 20 HRs. Only 4 players in double digit HRs. I'm going to beat you with a bunch of slappys buzzing around your heads like midges around Joba.

Playing in 1980 Royal Stadium where it is approximately 593 ft down the lines and about twice that to dead center. So make sure to bring you big, slow-ass juiced up HR hitters. A long fly out is as good as anything.

Game on bitches!

I think I'll stay up for opening day here.

And, in case you missed it...Cool Effin Papa Bell.

Nice Start for me 2-1 against Al.

Peeker starts 3-0, as does Swerb.

FUDU gets his ass handed to him. He is right, however, that nobody so far has gotten to Eck. Of course he hasn't pitched yet.

I'll update more later. That's what I remember off the top of my head.

I got something for the top of your fuckn head.

ETA: Rich is a lucky bastard and he knows it, 2 errors giving up essentially game winning runs, from easily one of the two best defensive teams in the league, total horse shit, not to mention HAL wasted no time in fucking me by NOT pitching Eck in the 9th of game 2 when he totally should have.

Might want to move this thread to a lesser viewed fantasy forum b/c at this rate my profanity and death wishes will not look good to some of your new sponsors.

Sweep!

Biggio with a 3 run bomb to pace the 10-4 win in the season opener ... then singles home Jim Presley with two down in the bottom of the 9th off Nolan Ryan for a walk off 4-3 win in game two. Then Daddy Wags homers late for the difference in another 4-3 win in game three. Bullpen doesn't surrender a run. Jim Freakin Presley goes 6-12 to be Robin to Biggio's Batman.

Babe Ruth injured for three games though. Will miss tonights series against Al's Cleveland Buckeyes. Lee Lacy gets three starts in right field. Daddy Wags goes into the 3 hole in the lineup.

Anyone see what time the games updated? Used to be like 2 AM. Remember scheduling my kids feedings around them when they were babies.

At least I can thank FUDU for something.

Sprained neck ... from watching Biggio whirl around the bases. Should be fine for tomorrow night. The Babe's gonna watch this one from the press box with a fifth of Beam, a couple packs of smokes, and 8-10 hot dogs.

Step up Ryan Howard.

Re: TCF - All Time Greats Online Stratomatic League

Unread postby Jumbo » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:27 am

After getting swept in their first 3 game series, calls are already being made for the head of the manager of Santana's Knees. After the fans opened up the newspaper, they discovered that despite adding 3 Finger Brown on waivers, the team's manager forgot to actually reset the starting lineup.

:hic:

It didn't help that the Knees lost two one-run games, including the home opener on a ninth inning error. And the third game on a blown save.

:pb:

Asked for comment, Manager Jumbo said, "It's a tough way to open the season, but we'll have Brown ready to go for the next series opener. We just have to remember not to get too high or get too low."

...not to mention that the fans are questioning the team's fundamentals coming out of spring training. The alleged "double play combination" of Scales and Lundy is on pace for 270 errors for the season.

The GM protested: "Our scouts said they'd only finish the season with about 53! It's not my fault!"

Fans were still not amused.
