Sell High On Paul Byrd?

Damn. Counting the opening day fiasco, Byrdie's thrown 10 2/3 IP. Struck out nine. Allowed only five hits. And nary a run.

If this was fantasy baseball, I'd have trade offers sent out to every team in my league right now.

Byrd usually has a good year every other year, and this is the year he should be good again. I say we keep him, because all of a sudden, we don't have starting pitching depth. Carmona is destined to be a set up guy. Miller will be our SP option, and Jason Stanford is working his way back into consideration.

Sounds reasonable, and there's always some arms in Buffalo and Akron to call up in case of injury. What can we get for Byrd? I'd definitely put out feelers and see what's out there.

I wouldn't dump him just yet. We need Lee to be back and up to scratch first. Then we need to test our Miller and see if he's good to go at the Majors level.

If this is an "on" year for Byrd then we could be sitting pretty as the trade deadline approaches. His contract is cheap and it has a team option so he's not technically an ending contract, but he provides no commitment beyond this season if the wheels come off to finish off. He's also pitched in both leagues. There might be several teams still in the race come July that would be interested. That's the benefit of having pitching to spare, you can acquire other needed stuff. Hopefully it's a seller's market this year.

Byrd and/or Westbrook will get traded this season, but it won't happen now. Pitchers gain so much value before the trade deadline that it would be stupid to trade them before. Anyway, I'm sure teams aren't going to buy Byrd after one start even though we may be willing to sell him. I like Byrd a lot, he was a great signing.

Why, exactly, would they trade Westbrook after giving him an extension. I had to look at when the post was made to make sure it wasn't before the signing.

Seriously? Westbrook will get traded this season? Get real.

Yeah, Westbrook is not going anywhere. And, without looking, I believe there is a clause in the CBA on newly signed contracts where guys cannot be traded for a certain amount of days.

I see no reason you trade Westbrook, Sowers or Lee at this point. All are quality pitchers, and are not overly expensive or going anywhere anytime until after 2010.

The guys on the block, if you ask me, are Carmona and Byrd....and moreso Byrd. But, if Paul Byrd is having his typical odd year type of season, why trade the guy? That's pretty good for the #5 guy. So, maybe instead you trade Carmona? Depending on what we get in return for him, I would consider it considering the depth in pitching in the system.

A lot of this depends on whether or not we keep C.C. and how well/fast Chuck Lofgren comes along, but if those things happen I think yes, sell Byrd while his stock is high. Adam Miller will be coming up soon, and could very well replace Byrd in that 4th righty spot.

A nice, solid relief pitcher would be a very nice trade-off, or an corner OF.

I'm telling you, the moment we trade Byrd, something will go wrong with our staff. An injury of some sort will happen and ten everyone will be screaming for Shapiro's head. If he is pitching well go with it, then see how things go this offseason with CC, pick up Byrd's option and then ou could trade him.

This is why you won't see Byrd (or anyone other pitcher) sent packing until probably late June at the earliest.
