Yeah, that was a great piece from Paul.
FWIW, Andy Marte was called "Andy Market" in the minors because people thought he would be H-U-G-E in baseball eventually. Still could be, but that nickname always caught me.
But it is true, nicknames do help people associate themselves with the team. Look at some from the 90s:
Eddie "Eat Drink and Be" Murray
Carlos "One if By Land, Two if By Sea, Three If" Baerga
Manny "Baby Bull" Ramirez
Dennis "El Presidente" Martinez
Orel "Bulldog" Hershiser (I always called him "The Nerd")
Jose "Senor Smoke" Mesa (or Senor Slam, Senor Joke, etc)
And tons more...
And, I remember the one I came up for Jeff Kent, who when he was with the Indians annoyed the hell out of me: Jeff-I-Kent-Hit
Or, Jason Jacome who I couldn't stand: Jason-Jacome-Put-Me-In
