Tribe's Miller to open season on disabled list

KISSIMMEE, Fla. Indians Manager Eric Wedge finds himself with one more decision to make at the end of spring training than he had bargained for.

Indians head trainer Lonnie Soloff confirmed Tuesday that right-handed relief pitcher Matt Miller will open the season on the disabled list. Soloff said Miller suffered a “mid-to-moderate” strain of his right forearm Saturday and will spend the next three-to-four weeks in rehabilitation.

Wedge must now decide between right-hander Tom Mastny and left-hander Juan Lara for the final spot in the Cleveland bullpen.

“Mastny is a righty, and Lara is a lefty, but that’s not everything that will go into our decision,” Wedge said. We need to look at length and what we need to compliment the other guys in our bullpen.”

Miller had been perhaps the Tribe’s best pitcher through much of spring training. He had struck out 16 over 7 1/3 innings and limited opposing batters to a .179 average before suffering what he described as a “cramp” in his right forearm while warming up before Saturday’s game against Atlanta. He had right elbow surgery last April, but was able to come back and pitch 14 games for Cleveland in September.

An MRI examination Monday revealed the strain, which Soloff said is not directly related to the elbow surgery. Miller is scheduled to begin a throwing program in a week to 10 days.

Funny how in other years, I would be worried as hell to lose a starting pitcher and reliever before the season even started. Granted, these guys should not be out long (hopefully). I am not too worried to go to the farm system to replace these guys for a few weeks and see what they can do. I think this is the opportunity guys like Carmona/A-Miller and Mastny/Lara/etc need to prove themselves.

Gotta be Mastny to take his place, no?

Hes been lights out in spring. Lara's ERA is low, but he's I saw in the PD this morning that teams ae batting .367 against him in spring.
