WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Left-hander Cliff Lee is in danger of opening the season on the disabled list.
Lee was scratched from a bullpen session Thursday because of reoccurring pain in his strained right abdominal muscle. Lonnie Soloff, Indians head athletic trainer, said Lee will rest for "48 hours."
He will then try to throw a bullpen session Sunday.
"If he can't throw Sunday, the start of the season is in doubt," said Soloff.
If that was the case, Soloff said Lee would be shut down for "10 to 12 days without throwing."
Manager Eric Wedge said he is trying to stay optimistic. He said if Lee can't open the season, Fausto Carmona would be the leading candidate to take his spot in the rotation.
"But we'll keep all our options open," said Wedge.
Lee, 14-11 last year, was scheduled to be the Tribe's No.3 starter behind C.C. Sabathia and Jake Westbrook. The Indians open the season with 13 games in 14 days, so they won't have a chance to go with a four-man rotation.
In 2003 Lee missed two months with a strained right abdominal muscle. He had hernia surgery at the end of the season. He had hernia surgery again at the end of the 2005 season.
