Hermanson holds open audition
By Tim Brown

Monday, Feb 19, 2007 3:32 pm EST
Right-hander Dustin Hermanson, who two seasons ago had a 2.04 ERA in 57 appearances for the Chicago White Sox, threw for several teams Monday in Phoenix. The Cleveland Indians, who recently had Keith Foulke retire, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants are believed to be interested.

A lower back injury limited Hermanson to six appearances last season.

Veterans still without jobs: Mark Redman and Steve Finley.

I just heard an interview with Shapiro. He said Hermanson's back wasn't in bad enough shape for the team to seriously consider him.

Shapiro suggested that Hermanson go help his sister move furniture around, making sure not to "use the legs to do the lifting", then to report back to the team for further analysis on his back.

I would have no problem bringing in Hermanson on a minor league deal along the lines of Karsay last year. When healthy, he is pretty good. If he isn't healthy, let him go. No harm in that.
