Rockies Apparently Set To Deal Helton

Unread postby swerb » Sun Jan 28, 2007 10:14 am

Twp good columns, the first from Buster Ohlney reporting that it could be to the Red Sox for Mike Lowell, Julian Tavarez, and a couple prospects (Rockies want Declarmen and Hansen).

The second, from the Denver Post, blasting the Rockies frugal ownership for wanting to get rid of the best player in the franchise's history.

Also, forget his couple month NL stint, Lugo was a nice pickup as well. And if D.L. Drew stays healthy ... good god.

Helton is a stud, go get him.

A. he's too healthy
B. in his prime

neither of which are criteria for the Indians. I still find it hard to believe theve spent 30 million this off season.

Helton would have been a nice fit in Boston. I still think this deal could go down by the end of ST.

Correct me if I am wrong - but haven't Helton's stats gone downhill the last couple of years (power stats at least) and wasn't part of the reason due to an illness he had last year?

His numbers have definitely been on the decline, power and average over the last couple years. 2 years ago he had a back issue, last year was some crazy stomach virus. Plus his home/road splits are :eek  . Helton could fit in fine in Boston, with the short porch in right and all the protection from Papi, Manny. Not too many other places make sense for him though (especially Cleveland).

There is also the steriod issue. I've seen it mentioned that Helton may be another example of a former user whose production is now tailing off now (and have some injury issues).

I can't remember who it was that accused him of being a user, and he blew up. I thought he was a little over-defensive at the time, and since has had the back problems and a mysterious infection that cost him slightly more games than a steriod suspension.

I need to see Helton pick back up the power post steroids before I make a move. Not saying he ised, however, looking at the timing and numbers, I think it's worth a look.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever seen the guy but he is a toothpick...I don't think he is a user of roids....he has an amazing swing and I think that is were he generates his power, which a bad back will defenitely drop the power stats

Helton is actually best friends with a guy I do business with, they went to UT together, and keep in constant contact throughout the season.

I talk to the guy pretty often, Helton actually comes up regularly, as we're both huge sports fans.

He laughs at the Helton roid rumors, says Helton hasn't picked up a weight since he was still the Vols QB. And that his offseason regiment consists of hunting, fishing, and beer drinking.

Helton's had some health issues, that's whats affected him. When healthy, he has one of the sweetest strokes in the game though.

This is the position baseball has put themselves in though. I have no idea if the guy does roids, however, a sudden drop-off at this time and I'm not the only one thinking it.

Actually, Helton is no longer either

A) Healthy
B) A stud

an .880 OPS for a first baseman playing half his games in Colorado is good, but it isn't a stud.
