McGwire: Forget The Hall Of Fame

Just reported by John Saunders on The Sports Reporters, a poll of AP HOF voters revealed that only 25% of voters plan on voting for McGwire ... well less than the 75% needed.

I wasn't expecting him to get in anytime soon, but I didn't think he would be that off.

He wouldn't get my vote. Either would Bonds, Sosa, Palmeiro. As we get older, it wil lbe interesting to see to what levels the voters soften on their current jihad against all of these probable steroid users.

I think that all of these "unsubstantiated" steroid users should be voted in, but since we have no idea who was or was not using I think that what we should do is put an asterix next to the names of players who were clearly NOT juicing (i.e. players from before the 80s), thus differentiating them.

THis steroid thing is such BS. We will never know who was or was not using, so you really should not be able to base these votes on something that was not substantiated in a court of law. I am in no way a steroid or player apologist, but it is clearly unfair to deny players based on suspicion.

The Hall of Fame is not the sacred shrine that purists would have you believe. It is full of racists, good old boys, and other known cheaters (Gaylord Perry anyone).

Don't these guys need a certain percentage of votes to stay on the ballot? Once they fall below that level, they are no longer eligible (except by the vet commity vote)?

a player with less than 5% of votes gets dropped

and only the veterans committee can put them on thereafter as they cant appear on any future BBWAA ballots
