Aeros no more. They'll be the Rubberducks.

I like it. I'm sure a lot of people will shit all over it the way they do any kind of change like this. But I think it's good. It screams minor league, which is appropriate. Because they're, you know...minor league.

The 13-year old in me immediately thought of calling them " the Rubbers."

Not that it really matters but this is so bad. Nothing wrong with Aeros.

Maybe it's an incentive to get players to move through the system and get to the bigs quicker. Who wants to play for the "Rubber Ducks" for an extended period of time?

mother nailed it here. There are gimmicky team names and logos all throughout minor league cities in every sport. These are the teams that do the themed jersey nights and odd promotions. This is a great name and logo for the city. Sure, the name may a little bit kitschy or gimmicky, but that's what the minor leagues are all about.

They're going to sell all kinds of merchandise and it's exceptionally easy to brand and promote a team like this (I've even seen the hashtag #quackron on Twitter today). It pays homage to Akron's history in a pretty unique and creative way.

Go to a minor league game in any city. It's families and old people. They'll get a kick out of the name. This name will play to the team's target audience.

Considering that there is an NHL franchise named Mighty Ducks after a frickin movie, this is not too bad. Not as good as the Macon Whoopies however.

I gave up whining about non-traditional minor league names long ago. If this gets more kids interested in baseball, hell yeah it's a good move.

That's what baseball needs. Not us old farts who want everything to be _____ Sox or the major league affiliate's name. We're already buying tickets. The sport dies without getting kids involved.

My initial reaction was "that's pretty weird", but then I saw the logo and I think that it's kinda cool. Now I'm pumped up to get my RubberDuck merch.

Looks like an amped up Daffy Duck.

Correct on the catering to families. Jamestown changed their colors and their mascot from a generic dog to an anthropomorphised bushel of grapes a few years ago and everyone loves the logo. Aeros, kind of generic, not connected to the city, this one has a connection. And when you can't think of a animal, make one up like Seawolves. Haven't found many of those along the lakeshore up here in NW PA.

Agreed on the purple. I might buy merchandise now.

I can't tell if the duck is pissed or constipated.

Akron certainly doesn't have the aviation history of Cleveland (which is largely unknown compared to say Dayton), I can't even remember the warbird builder that was here. Its better known in aviation history for the Zeppelins and blimps.

But Akron is better known for rubber. The problem is getting that in a team name somehow. Kind of like integrating zippers into a team name. And the similar comical references. The Zips have pretty much ignored it altogether until this year...

Riding the Towpath today beside Canal Park I saw the tie-in with ducks. Dozens of them reside in the park between CP and Children's Hospital.
