INDIANS RECALL RHP JENSEN LEWIS & PROMOTE
RHP JUSTIN GERMANO FROM AAA COLUMBUS
RHP MITCH TALBOT Placed on DL; RHP JESS TODD Optioned to AAA
CLEVELAND, OH-- Today, the Indians announced they have
placed RHP MITCH TALBOT on the 15-day disabled list with a mid-back
strain and have optioned RHP JESS TODD to AAA Columbus. To fill out the
active 25-man roster, the Indians have recalled RHP JENSEN LEWIS from
AAA Columbus and have purchased the contract of RHP JUSTIN GERMANO from
AAA Columbus.
Lewis begins his 4th stint with the Indians this year,
where he has gone 2-2 with a 4.18 ERA in 22 relief appearances (23.2IP,
23H, 11R/ER, 14BB, 16K). He was with the Indians from April 5-May 6,
May 30-June 23 and most recently from July 17-19. At AAA Columbus he
has compiled a record of 2-0 with 2 saves and a 1.77 ERA in 16 outings
(20.1IP, 17H, 4R/ER, 7BB, 22K), limiting Triple A hitters to a .227
(17-75) average against. Lewis has allowed a run in just 2 of his 16
appearances at AAA and has limited right-handed hitters to a .118 (4-34)
average against. He wears #50. Lewis assumes Talbot's spot on the
roster after his recent July 21 option.
Germano, 27 (turns 28 on Aug. 6), has split the 2010
season between AA Akron and AAA Columbus after being signed by the
Indians as a minor league free agent on March 24. He began the season
at AA Akron, going 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA (19.1IP, 17H, 6R/ER, 4BB, 16K) in
7 games/1 start before being promoted to AAA Columbus on May 19th. Thus
far with Columbus he has gone 3-2 with a save and a 3.38 ERA (53.1IP,
49H, 23R/20ER, 10BB, 37K, .241 avg) in 17 games/6 starts. Combined
between the two stops he is 5-3 with a save and a 3.22 ERA (72.2IP, 66H,
29R/26ER, 14BB, 53K) in 24 games/7 starts. Germano has started in his
last 3 outings at Columbus going 1-0 with a 4.40 ERA (14.1IP, 20H,
10R/7ER, 0BB, 9K).
The 6-3, 200-pound right-hander was originally drafted
by the San Diego Padres in the 13th round of the 2000 June draft out of
Claremont (CA) High School. He spent the 2009 season pitching for the
Fukuoka Hawks in Japan where he went 5-4 with a 4.38 ERA in 14 starts.
Germano owns a career Major League record of 8-16 with a 5.27 ERA
(205.0IP, 226H, 131R/120ER, 70BB, 119K) in 47 career games/35 starts
over parts of 4 big league seasons with the San Diego Padres and
Cincinnati Reds. He most recently appeared with San Diego in 2008,
going 0-3 with a 5.98 ERA (43.2IP, 54H, 31R/29ER, 13BB, 17K) in 12
games/6 starts. He wears #39.
Talbot left last night's 11-4 loss to the New York
Yankees in Progressive Field in the 3rd inning with a mid-back strain.
So far this year he has gone 8-9 with a 4.09 ERA (121.0IP, 120H,
61R/55ER, 51BB, 67K) in 20 starts for the Indians. This will mark
Mitch's 1st trip to the disabled list at the Major League level.
Todd went 0-0 with a 7.50 ERA (6.0IP, 9H, 5R/ER, 3BB,
9K) in 5 appearances with the Indians since being recalled from AAA
Columbus on July 19th.
The Indians now have five players on the Major League DL
(Sizemore, Laffey, Reyes, Wood, Talbot). With the addition of Germano,
the Indians 40-man roster now stands at 40.
