Memphis police have found the body of a man that sources say is former NBA player Lorenzen Wright.

The body was found in southeast Memphis and there appears to be a self-inflicted gun shot wound on the body, according to police sources.

Some backstory:
Memphis Police officers are on the scene of a wooded area at Hacks Cross and Winchester in southeast Memphis where a body has been found.

Officers can't yet confirm the identity of the victim, but two police sources say they are investigating whether it may be the body of missing basketball star Lorenzen Wright. Police sources have confirmed they are investigating a 911 hangup call from Wright's cellphone left Monday morning - the day he disappeared.

The body was found by someone who called police today.

Wright likely had a lot of cash on him when he was last seen leaving his ex-wife’s Collierville home, fueling concerns he may be the victim of foul play, according to a Collierville police report released today.

Wright, a former NBA standout who once played for the Memphis Grizzlies, recently flew in from Atlanta to Memphis to visit friends and his six children, friends said. He was scheduled to catch a ride back to the Atlanta area July 19 with a buddy with his six kids in tow. He was last seen in the wee hours of that morning, at about 2 a.m., leaving his ex-wife’s Whisperwood Drive home, but his former wife, Sherra Robinson Wright, 39, told police she doesn’t know who he left with or what type of car they were in, according to the missing person’s report.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

I've been to Memphis only five or six times for work so I'm not extremely familiar with it. But your description above sounds like most of the Memphis I know. Save a few square blocks downtown and around Beale Street, the place is rough all over.

Driving back from Tunica casinos at about 2am one night the pit boss gave me the 90 minute directions around Memphis and the 45 minute directions through it. Told me if I went the direct route to make sure the car was gassed up and I didn't stop for drink, food or red lights.

My brother-in-law and family moved out to Collierville. He used to live in the city and while I never felt unsafe in his nabe, I didn't exactly feel at ease. I can't remember where it was off of Poplar but that seems like the whole damn city. Reasonably close to Memphis U (or is it UofM?) where he did his grad work.

I had a class to conduct at 8am. I opted for 45 more minutes of sleep and the direct route that evening but I've taken both routes back depending on the circumstances.

Well, as of now they're only "reports". But if they're true...yeah, we can probably rule that out. Unless Lorenzen Wright was Mufasa from Austin Powers and just wouldn't die.

That's a great way to describe Collierville. Not in harms way, but not far away from it either. All of the neighborhoods directly south and southeast of the loop (240) are tough. Hickory Hill, Orange Mound, Zodiac Park are all not that far due West of Collierville.

The area directly downtown around Union and Beale is cleaned up and safe/nice, but that's all relatively recent. The Lemoyne Gardens Projects, which at one point in the 90's was thought to be one of the most dangerous places in America, stood within 3 miles of Beale. The only place I ever felt truly safe was right past the state line in North Miss or North/Northeast of the 240 loop in Raleigh, Cordova, Frayser, etc. Some really nice residential areas there.
