Cavaliers Magic Number

Unread postby CP » Thu Jan 08, 2009 1:57 am

For the division, if my math is correct, the Cavaliers' Magic Number currently stands at 43. The Pistons have 12 losses, and thus can win 70 games by winning out. The Cavaliers have 28 wins, and thus need 43 wins to win the division outright regardless of what the Pistons do.

Not putting the cart before the horse (and really, a division championship is LOW on the team's goals for the year), but if the Cavaliers go 34-14 (.708 ball) in their final 48 games, they get to 62 wins, and the Cavaliers are playing .824 ball right now. The Pistons (currently playing .636 ball) would have to go 41-8 over their last 49 games to get to 62 wins, or .837 ball, just to tie the Cavaliers.

Further putting the 28-6 start in perspective, the current #4 seed (Atlanta) is a mere 1/2 game ahead of Detroit.

Thus, I have the Cavaliers' Magic Number at

43

Pistons are dead. I'm worried about the Celts and home court.

The torch was passed 2 years ago when LBJ dropped the 48... After trading Chauncey Detroit knows it too.

Last year's division win was because we didn't want it and had all the little injuries and contract hold-outs.
Playing here is the closest thing to heaven. Really, I mean it's amazing to be in a place where the fans truly cherish their football team and stick behind them win or lose. That torch wasn't passed. We straight-up gaffled it.

I don't think the Pistons have conceded anything yet and I believe it would be a mistake to count them out in the Division race. They have beaten us in the only meeting so far this year and by our worst losing margin, I think. I'm not worried about them but I am pleased every time they lose. They will be a tough out come playoff time.

I still think the Cavs can take them.

I remember that game; Pistons went something like 13 for their first 13 in the 4th quarter. I wouldn't use that game to compare the Pistons and Cavs. Just remember. A worse-than now Cavs team has beaten a better-than now Pistons team in the playoffs, on the road. The Pistons don't scare me.

Well, they don't scare me either...now. But, this is only January. A lot can happen between now and the playoffs in terms of trades, injuries, slumps, etc. I think our focus should be best record in the East and NBA in that order. Having said that, I think it would be risky to think that they are out of it and will not factor or have any say in the East.

I want to say 'Fuck the Pistons", they are yesterdays newspaper but I can't.

That game was also a back-to-back for us I believe and Pistons played out of their minds at home and that score was much closer than it seemed.

Trust me, they are dead. They don't even make Round 2...

By the way, I think the one player not many are talking about that could be moved and actually make a HUGE difference is Rasheed. I see the Pistons moving him for picks, a young player and expiring contracts. He could be someone that makes a big impact. (I'm thinking he heads West...)

I've thought about Rasheed but I think the chances of Joe D. trading him to the Cavs are less than the Browns winning the Super Bowl.

And the Pistons lose again...

Cavaliers 30-6
Pistons 22-15

(Incidentally, as the Hawks are now 22-15 as well, the Cavaliers magic number for clinching home field in the first round of the playoffs is the same as clinching the division).

Season Series against the current top 4:
Orlando 0-0
Boston 1-1
Atlanta 1-1

Cavaliers Magic Number for the Division and First-Round Home Field Advantage is now:

Detroit is finished. They're going to be sellers before the trade deadline. Maybe we could get Rip from them? :lmfao:

With 8 games left before the All-Star break, it is not inconceivable that the Cavaliers have their playoff magic number down around 15 or so (assuming the Knicks and Nets and whoever else is down there continue to play sub-.500 ball). Even if Cavaliers go 5-3 and the Knicks/Nets go 3-5, the magic number is down to 15 to clinch a playoff spot at the All-Star break.

For argument's sake, a 6-2 pre-break finish puts the Cavaliers at 41-10. A 4-4 showing by Detroit (they do have Cleveland, Boston, and Atlanta on their schedule) will put the division crown under 20 by the All-Star break.

Crazy.

*Though the Nets are not currently the #8 seed, they have the fewest losses of those teams in that position.

After tonight's contest at Miami, the Cavaliers have only 9 road games remaining. For the moment, I've set the Cavaliers' magic number for making the playoffs at 4, since there are 3 teams with 33 losses and I can't be certain that the Cavaliers hold the tie-breakers over them all. I'll go through the scenarios on Wednesday, since Milwaukee and New Jersey play each other. It's likely that a Cavaliers win tonight and a Milwaukee win on Tuesday against the Nets could mean that that the Cavaliers can clinch a playoff berth at home against the Bucks on Wednesday (the Knicks play at home against Atlanta that night).

Cavaliers 46-12 (Games Remaining: 24 - 14H, 10A)
Current #2 seed: Celtics 47-14 (Games Remaining: 21 - 11H, 10A)
Current #3 seed: Magic 43-16 (Games Remaining: 23 - 12H, 11A)
Current #4 seed: Hawks 33-26 (Games Remaining: 23 - 14H, 9A)
Current 2nd place, Central Division: Pistons 29-29 (Games Remaining: 24 - 12H, 12A)
Current #8 seed (or team with 8th fewest losses in conference): Bucks 29-33 (Games Remaining: 20 - 12H, 8A)

Cavaliers Magic Number (#1 seed):

UPCOMING CLINCHING SCENARIOS:
Boston and Cleveland currently have 47 wins. Three teams vying for the #8 seed have 33 losses: Milwaukee, Chicago and New Jersey. Those teams can only get to 49 wins at the moment by winning out.

Cleveland vs.
Milwaukee 3-0 (1 game remaining)
Chicago 3-1
New Jersey 1-0 (2 games remaining)

Cleveland owns the tiebreaker over Milwaukee and Chicago, and a combination of two Cavalier wins and any two losses by either team means that Cleveland will finish over them. By the time the Cavaliers play New Jersey, this will be moot.

TONIGHT'S GAMES (with playoff implications for Cavaliers):
Chicago @ Charlotte (7 pm EST)
Denver @ Detroit (7:30 pm EST)
New Jersey @ Milwaukee (8 pm EST)

By my calculations, if Milwaukee and Charlotte win, and Cleveland beats Milwaukee on 3/4/09, Boston beating New Jersey later on 3/4/09 would in fact clinch a playoff berth for the Cavaliers and Celtics.

McLeod reported that the Cavaliers have clinched a playoff spot. Not true. Milwaukee, now with 35 losses, cannot overtake the Cavaliers, but the Nets can. No playoff clinching yet.

Will update this thread after the rest of the applicable games but wanted to make clear that a playoff spot had not yet been clinched.
