Cavaliers Magic Number

For the division, if my math is correct, the Cavaliers' Magic Number currently stands at 43. The Pistons have 12 losses, and thus can win 70 games by winning out. The Cavaliers have 28 wins, and thus need 43 wins to win the division outright regardless of what the Pistons do.

Not putting the cart before the horse (and really, a division championship is LOW on the team's goals for the year), but if the Cavaliers go 34-14 (.708 ball) in their final 48 games, they get to 62 wins, and the Cavaliers are playing .824 ball right now. The Pistons (currently playing .636 ball) would have to go 41-8 over their last 49 games to get to 62 wins, or .837 ball, just to tie the Cavaliers.

Further putting the 28-6 start in perspective, the current #4 seed (Atlanta) is a mere 1/2 game ahead of Detroit.

Well, they don't scare me either...now. But, this is only January. A lot can happen between now and the playoffs in terms of trades, injuries, slumps, etc. I think our focus should be best record in the East and NBA in that order. Having said that, I think it would be risky to think that they are out of it and will not factor or have any say in the East.

With 8 games left before the All-Star break, it is not inconceivable that the Cavaliers have their playoff magic number down around 15 or so (assuming the Knicks and Nets and whoever else is down there continue to play sub-.500 ball). Even if Cavaliers go 5-3 and the Knicks/Nets go 3-5, the magic number is down to 15 to clinch a playoff spot at the All-Star break.

For argument's sake, a 6-2 pre-break finish puts the Cavaliers at 41-10. A 4-4 showing by Detroit (they do have Cleveland, Boston, and Atlanta on their schedule) will put the division crown under 20 by the All-Star break.

For the moment, I've set the Cavaliers' magic number for making the playoffs at 4, since there are 3 teams with 33 losses and I can't be certain that the Cavaliers hold the tie-breakers over them all. I'll go through the scenarios on Wednesday, since Milwaukee and New Jersey play each other. It's likely that a Cavaliers win tonight and a Milwaukee win on Tuesday against the Nets could mean that that the Cavaliers can clinch a playoff berth at home against the Bucks on Wednesday (the Knicks play at home against Atlanta that night).
