This is an event that is near and dear to my heart due to tragically losing my father to ALS.
For the past 9 years, the Strike Out! ALS Benefit and Auction, held at the Terrace Club at Progressive Field each May, has raised money to support a wide range of programs and services for individuals fighting ALS and their families in Northern Ohio. The evening`s festivities include a silent auction & spirits table raffle and is highlighted by the presentation of the Iron Horse Award to an individual in the sports community that has made notable contributions to their community. Past Iron Horse Award recipients include: Andre Thornton (2001), Herb Score (2002), Omar Vizquel (2003), Mike & Sharon Hargrove (2004), Bob Feller (2005), Rick Manning (2006), the memory of Casey Coleman (2007) and Charles Nagy (2008). This year’s Iron Horse Award Honoree is Bob DiBiasio of the Cleveland Indians.
The evening also includes a presentation of the Legacy Award, which recognizes an individual who has played a significant and extensive role in advancing the mission of The ALS Association Northern Ohio Chapter. This year’s Legacy Award Honorees are Tom and Nancy Yates.
New for the 2009 event is the presentation of the Diamond Award which will be presented to Mary Wheelock and her Walk to Defeat ALS™ team – Group W- for their outstanding participation and fundraising efforts for all 9 years of the Cleveland Walk to Defeat ALS™.
To date, this event has raised over $1 million to help patients with ALS and their families in Northern Ohio and we are hoping to add much more to that in the coming years!
