There is a beer thread like this so i figured why not wine. I know there a few winos out there so why not.

Good Zin 76% with a little cab and a splash of other grapes. About 20.00 and worth it.

I have bought $30 wine that I thought sucked and had $8 wine I have liked. Therefore I refuse to pay much for it at all. Since I finally have a solid wine and beer store I usually just go up and ask for a something good for under $15 and preferably from the US (Go America!). I despise red as it is the only thing to give me a hang over, so I usually go with white. Had a bottle of this for valentines day when making dinner. I thought it was very solid, no bite and I would definitely get it again.

Doesn't fit Ziner's "Made in America" requirement, but if you can find it on sale ($12.99 at the local megamart down here) it's a great wine for fish and seafood. Bright flavors, really crisp.

And Ziner - you gotta try some of the Cali reds. Best value wines in the world. Just don't drink 2 bottles and you'll avoid the hangover Since you liked the Chardonnay, try a Ravens Wood Cab.

You might want to try a California Pinot Noir, very silky, or any other light red wine such as a Cotes Du Rhone (a wine region in France) and eventually you might learn to appreciate reds.

If you are more of a casual wine fan and don't want the hassle of developing a taste for red wine, whites are very good too. MattVan's Sauvignon Blanc is a winner too. The New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc's are very citrusy and can even have a little touch of green pepper which sounds crazy. Another good wine you might like is a Vouvray (region in France) it is a good wine from Chenin Blanc grapes that has just a bit of fizz and very high acidity and lemon-citrus flavor or a granny smith apple (sour) touch to it. The sour is offset with a little bit of sweetness - very good. Most California Chenin Blanc is bland/boring stuff although there are exceptions.


Your comment about price of wines is very accurate. You can get a good bang for the buck at the $15 price point. I don't like spending over $20 for a wine unless it is recommended to me by someone i trust who knows what i like. Dropping $30 on a wine does not guarantee a good wine experience and if i am dropping that kind of dough I want a guarantee.

Hebner, it isnt that I dont like reds, they just give me nasty headaches the next morning pretty much regardless of amount I drink, and I am one of those people who very rarely get hangovers. So something in it doesn't agree with me. I will admit I do like white better than red.

One thing I have started is to save the bottles in my wine racks of the ones I like. I don't drink wine often enough to remember what I did and didnt like so this has been coming in handy lately. I am sure it isnt the most ingenious idea ever, but I figured I would share.

I spent a few nights at the Ravenswood winery in 2007. Very good people and a very good time (one of my friends real rich friend was mayer of Sonoma at the time and I was doing an SF project for work).

The Ravenswood peeps will tell you straight up that their whites are meh to feh. The specialize in Zin and make a damn good/damn strong one.

Best under 13 dollah Zin I've ever had.

But trumping around Ravenswood whites? I hope your next pussy headache spits your skull in half.

Maybe the sulfites are higher in red wine and that is what is giving you the headaches. A lot of people have that reaction to sulfites. My brother is one tough S.O.B. and if he even has 1 glass of red wine it gives him real bad headaches.

I keep track of all of the wine i drink in an excel spreadsheet but that is a bit extreme. your method sounds a lot easier especially if you only drink wine every once in a while. hell, there is so much good white wine out there you can easily stay with whites and never get bored.

Have you tried any rose’ wine? get a good dry one but not "white zinfandel" that is way too sweet. I know you prefer to go american but in my opinion the best rose’ is from Spain and it can be had for well under 10 bucks. you serve it chilled and it is very refreshing but has a little more character than a white and might not mess wth your system.

I walk in, tell him how much I want to spend, and generally what I'm looking for, they hardly miss.

I don't generaly spend more than $15 if I can help it.

Heinens is good too, and usually there is somebody on hand to give a good recommendation as well.

Now that it is getting warmer, a white wine is always nice on a hot day. Ironstone Obsession. A sweet and spicy wine with a small amount of fizz. Similar to a Gewurtztraimner and can be had at Trader Joes for less than $10.

Had this on the patio tonight while listening to the game. Very tasty with a little Gewurtztraimner in it but mostly Merlot and Syrah.

The girl and I have been drinking Spellbound Petit Syrah. Took some to my folks who are big wine experts and they love the stuff. Its only $14 a bottle so its reasonable, especially when Earthquate is $29 and not necessarily better.

Got a case of this on my trip to the Finger Lakes region this past August. About $9 and very decent wine for the price. Good acidity and fruit balance make it a good everyday wine that matches well with most foods. Not a real heavy wine so it can be paired with lighter fare such as chicken, salmon or is good on it's own.

New Age white wine from Arentina. Very good refreshing wine with a little fizz to make things interesting. High acidity balanced out nicely with a little sweetness for a delightful wine to sip on a warm summmer's eve. This is one i would recommend to people who aren't wine drinkers. This is almost like a wine cooler. A chill and chug type wine with lower alcohol of 9.5%. It is about 9 or 10 bucks. We bought 6 the last time we went for wine as we like to have it about once per week.

The guy I brew beer with also makes his own wine. Last Saturday was a pomegranite riesling as well as a blackberry (most of us out here have blackberry plants/bushes).

Not much of a wine guy but this guy is 37 and he and his dad have been doing this for 20 years.

It's ridiculous. The old man lives in Erie and grows 3 kinds of grapes on 3/4 of an acre and my buddy also grows grapes on his 3 acres. The stuff is table quality as far as my uneducated palate can tell.

His best creation though was making a chiller from a 10 gallon cooler and 50 feet of copper tubing. Room temperature keg under pressure through the cooler with ice packed on copper equals ice cold beer in literally seconds.

The online wine retailer that I'm a member of is expanding to the US.

They're called Naked Wines and essentially what their ethos is, is to find independent winemakers and take them to market. So, none of these big name, commercial wines.

Real wines, made by real people and no frills advertising/marketing etc.

So, like I said, they're expanding to the US and it appears they're looking for some US consumers to do some BETA testing of their wines and post reviews about them online.

I don't know the ins and outs, but it looks like you just have to register and they'll send you some wines to review - I may be wrong.

Anyway, worth looking into if you're a wine lover anyway.

I did. Received a nice response which essentaiily read "we have no clue how this is going to work, or if it's going to work at all, but if we can legally do it and ship to your state then we'll keep you in mind."

I am far more optimistic about the Browns going 16-0 than I am about the free wine beta.

After swerb gives me my gift card/"salary", I go my liquor store and buy a 12 pack of wine which lasts me a couple of weeks or so (occasionally I go a little nuts...)

I usually get myself an assortment to pair with the various culinary creations/abominations that emerge from my kitchen. There's always a baseline which is good and cheap, a rare but existant combination in wine if you know where to look. My baseline includes:

Sparkling - Roederer Estate, $16. Sparkling wines go well with almost every food, and aren't just for celebrations. Excellent with cheese, especially Parmesan, and can elevate a sweeter dish as well. Interesting pairing: poached or grilled salmon

Pinot Noir - Mark West, $9. Pinot noir is probably the most versatile wine, able to go with fish or steak equally well. Mark West is lighter in body but still has a full and proper pinot flavor. Interesting pairing: takeout sushi. Note: it is unknown if this Mark West is the former Cavs' center who is the proprietor of the estate, although I'd bet against him having this sort of finesse...

Shiraz - Marquis Philips, $15. If you like big red wines, the most consistent value and highest quality is in Aussie Shiraz. There's a ton of good stuff out there, and Marquis Philips is one of the most consistently excellent producers. All their wines are phenomenal, but the base shiraz at $15 is more than drinkable. Also try the Sarahs Blend at $12. Interesting pairing: burgers. Shiraz and grilled meat is a winner.

Cabernet Sauvignon - Avalon, $9. California cabs have become really stupid in price recently. Avalon produces a quality product without all the hype, and it isn't an overextracted fruit bomb like most high end cabs (not that there's anything wrong with that, mind you). Interesting pairing: short ribs.

Italian, Bordeaux blend: Falesco Vittiano, $8. Probably the best wine for the buck out there, this is a merlot-cab blend with italian terroir and soul, and it is phenomenally made. If you're having any red-sauce based Italian food, this should be your dance partner. Interesting pairing: stuffed calamari.

Italian - Cantina Zaccagnini il vino 'dal tralcetto' Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva, $12. I know what you're thinking - "the fuck dude, like I'm going to remember that?" I'll make it easy - get the Italian bottle that has a little stick from the grape vines tied to the front of it, the label is white with red lettering that looks like it was drawn by hand. Italian wines are far and away my favorite, and Zaccagnini makes a wine with the feeling of higher end nebbolio-based wines without the impossible price points. A little lighter, but that's not bad by any means - it will still stand up to whatever you put against it. Interesting pairing: pork chops!

Zinfandel - Ridge Three Valleys, $18. A little high for the "everyday" wine, but I love the boys from Ridge and all the wines they make. Their high end cabs are smart and phenomenal, and they have a good range of other varietals as well. If you want to splurge, find something from Ridge and it will be good. Interesting pairing: anything off the smoker

Zinfandel - Cline Zinfandel, $9. Much more affordable, everything Cline makes is good as well. The Ancient Vines Zinfandel is bigger and fruitier for about $5 more, but the base zin is more than drinkable and quite enjoyable. Interesting pairing: pork tenderloin

Interesting red - Cline Ancient Vines Mourvedre, $14. If you ever see this wine, buy the whole shelf. Very food friendly, not too tannic, well made, just brilliant. This is the Hancock house wine. Interesting pairing: rotisserie chicken, or roasted duck.

Spanish - Las Rocas Garnacha, $11. A big bowl of fruit, this is a very good wine with a subtle Spanish flair. it's just as at home with takeout pizza as it is with kielbasas, very versatile wine and not overly tannic. Interesting pairing: paella (make sure you've got plenty of smoked paprika in there)

Usually there are a few token whites in the box as well as some more high end stuff, but there is my base basket which gives me a solid mix of wines from which to choose to drink with my dinner.

For $10-$15 bottles go out to Colonial Beverage in Chesterland. It's worth the pilgrimage. They have a great selection of low priced/high quality bottles. We usually head out every other month or so and stock up.

Before I moved south, Colonial was my wine store. I still get his emails and miss having a good, reliable local wine shop with the owner in the store. Just had a quick look at the US Naked Wines site and when you add the voucher to an account, on the home page it recommends a 6-pack case (3 red, 3 white) which is $61.00

Take off your $60 voucher and add delivery and you end up having to pay $10.99 plus tax for the 6-pack. Can't argue with that!
