This holiday season, I just started to realize the joy that a nice single malt scotch can bring. I have had an Obon and the below. The Ardmore got me hooked. I got this bottle for $41. Never tasted anything like it before, which is one of the reasons why I like it so much.

Native Clevelander here, lived in Scotland from '78 to '85, been drinking single malts since then. I was pleased to see the thread you started, and happy that another convert has joined the ranks of single malt scotch drinkers. Oban is a good one. My all time favorite is The MacAllan, 12 year old. I'll even throw in a Scottish toast for you to use when having a drink with a mate (and preferably another convert to the joys of single malt):
"Here's tae us;
Who's like us?
Damn' few;
And they're all dead!"

It helps if you pronounce "dead" as "deed"

I like to experiment with the large variety of single-malts out there. I like them smoky, I also like JW Black.

That stuff is wonderful, albeit heavy on the head. I am a fan of the lighter scotches with more grassy/spicy/vanilla notes, and Balvanie 12 year Double Wood scratches me where I itch. If you have the chance, try Macallan Fine Oak 15 or Glenrothes 1991.

As for regular, not super aged/expensive stuff:
Laphroaig ($50ish)
Highland Park 12 ($35-$40ish)
Bowmore Legend ($20ish) Fantastic for the price.

I really like the Ardbeg 10 and Lagavulin 16, but though I have bottles open I drink sparingly from them. Laphroaig 10 is what I reach for most of the time.
