Designed for the upper premium market, they're a response from bourbon producers to the success of single malt whisky. More high end then WT, Beam, etc. We began selling these in back in '01-'02 when I used to work at The Ritz Carlton. I found/find them VERY smooth and excellent for sipping either with dinner or after.
For as good as any of these small batch bourbons are, I still go back to my first love...
