swerb, that was me that let Kazmir go. It was between Contreras, Kaz and Patterson (who was just picked up). I'm hoping that the way Contreras pitched in the post season is the way he pitches from now on. The guy's got electric stuff.

I has Kaz for the 1st 2 years of our league. I wanted him again.

I'll check in tmw morning. We need to do better than 1-1/2 rounds a day. I'm going tp Myrtle Beach on Weds and this needs to be wrapped up by then.

I wanted to get further than this to make up for all the crap picks I'll get while gone for several hours over the next few days.

Sleep is for sissies.

Please remember the time difference for me in the AM. I'll be up and about by 6AM my time, so if there is a run at 6:15...I promise to be at my computer by 7AM.

A proposal to speed things up

Unread postby Goozer » Thu Mar 23, 2006 11:32 am

At the risk of being ridiculed for proposing something, here is a suggestion to speed things up a bit. I was hoping that this draft wouldn't drag on into next week, but at this pace it sure the hell looks likely. Nonetheless a proposal:

(1) If you know that you are going to be offline for an extended period of time, post it here in this forum to make everyone aware of your status.

(2) If you are going to be offline for awhile, send a list to Swerb and/or someone that picks after you so a pick can be made on your behalf. I guess you could send this list to multiple peeps, but f you send your list to someone who picks right before you, you run the risk of that person picking someone near the top of your list - so be it.

(3) Let's think about reducing the time limit for picks to no more than 2 hours for the the next day or two - if things pick up we should leave it at 2 hours, if things continue to move at a snails pace, then we should talk about reducing it to 1 hour. Theoretically, if everyone takes 2 hours per pick, we're talking about only 6 picks per day and that's not good.

(4) Get rid of the whole autopick idea - I don't like it. In its place, after 2 hours the person on the clock gets 'passed' and the subsequent team is on the clock. The team that gets 'passed' can pick ASAP when he logs back on; in the meantime this almost serves as an incentive for the teams next in line to pick quickly to beat the team that got passed to pick. Make sense? This is comparable to the NFL draft when you hear or see teams get a card ready to make a pick when the 15 minutes are near expiration.

Thoughts / comments?

Auto picks

Unread postby ramllov » Thu Mar 23, 2006 11:52 am

Goozer, you have some good points.

I don't think it would be fair for me to comment about skipping members. However, I do agree on tightening up the times.

We all drafted a round, so everyone is aware of the time crunch. It may just be the start of the draft.

I would say, an hour per pick. If you do not make the pick either the best offensive or pitcher on the board. Swerb can look at your roster and determine which is needed. Or Swerb can make a best selection.

I would prefer if a member made their own selection. Swerb is to good at this stuff. It might be an advantage if some teams skipped their turn and let Swerb pick for them. I might be one of those members.

The reason why I did not think about skipping members is I doubt that I will miss a pick with an open time frame of an hour. My major scheduling problem was yesterday as a soccer dad.

This is alot of fun. I wish we would speed it up. However, I am enjoying it. The additional time is beneficial, however, the real talent will show in the later rounds.

True, but I won last year's league because of the waiver wire pickups that I made, and not because of the guys I drafted in the later rounds.

Getting Lackey, Haren, T. Jones, Freel, Cain, and Crosby went a long way in determining the outcome.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

I've done alot of these. No matter what you do, you are going to have bumps.

I'll go with whatever the majority wants.

If everyone would just let us know (in this thread) when they are going to be away from their PC for an extended period of time, and submit a list to me or someone else ... we could easily do 3 rounds a day.

I'm personally in no hurry to get this done. Even at this snails pace we will finish by opening day. But I know others have vacations, and other things going on.

See, the tough part about submitting lists is that if there are 7-8 people picking before us, it makes it tougher to decide what player to select at a position.

Example: I had Bob Wickman's name typed into the message box, but then looked at the list of available guys, and had a feeling I'd be able to pick up at least one of the remaining guys in the next round. Matt Holliday (if he does what I'm expecting him to) was a better pick for me at that point since I knew I'd get at least one of the closers still on the board.

I can't think of a way for this to progress "faster" because, technically, we all have lives (rumor has it, feel free to dispute this) and can't all be by the computer when needed. How many rounds are left, like 12? Opening Day is still in the distance, so I don't see us being in a huge rush. Even if the last pick isn't in on Opening Day, how "necessary" are those picks going to be on Day One?

2 rounds in 28 + hours.

pitiful.

I feel like a fool monitoring these boards on and off (mostly on) with no movement.

"Does anybody care?"

I've found that the best way to do these things is for everybody to just bite the bullet and show up for an online live draft where the whole thing is done in about 90 minutes.

Lightening

Well, Ram's up, and according to Miami's weather radar, the thunderstorms are moving out. Hopefully he'll be back online soon.

Since the temps have been in the 30's all week here, we haven't had to worry about thunderstorms - lucky us.

I think I picked about 15 minutes after Goozer

Unread postby ramllov » Thu Mar 23, 2006 6:40 pm

I thought I was pretty quick with my pick.

Once I saw Goozer pick a relief pitcher, my choice was automatic. In fact, I probably was going to pick a relief pitcher even if he did not.

There was too many of these guys going off the board. The majority of those who are left are rated as medium or low as regard to stability.

I could never get saves last year. The second reliever I picked last year was terrible. I thought I did my homework, but no, I missed on that. I picked Borowski as my third choice and it did not work.

So, Gonzalez, is a guy who was on my roster all last year as I was hoping he would get the job and Mesa would be traded.

I think in last years numbers I got 2 or 3 points for my save production. This is one area I can fix.

I thought I could wait until the fifth round of this year's draft, but six teams have one reliever on their rosters. There are another five teams with only two relievers.

Since we only have 30 available with 14 teams, it is pretty obvious that the pickings are getting pretty slim. With approximately 20+ relievers already gone, some members better dance and get a few of the last ones.

It is amazing how a run on a position could happen this early in the draft.

I remember the offers some of our members made me to provide me with a starting RP from a poor team. I had to pass and learn from my mistake. I hope I picked the right one of the few that were left.
I enjoy this stuff.

Should we consider having people leave a cell phone number with Rich (or someone in the league who is checking the progress frequently) so that we don't have so many 2 hour breaks?

It seems like it's usually just one or two guys that slow us down, twice we've waited 2 1/2 hours for a team to select after breezing through several picks in under an hour.

A quick phone call to let you know you're on the clock might speed things up nicely. If you get the call and can't get to a computer at least you could make the pick yourself via phone.

OR

Maybe we set aside an hour or two per day and try and get through one round in that hour. I'm not sure if that's possible due to work and time zone issues but I'm up for anything that would get this draft moving faster.

Feel free to email or pm me your cell phone #. This practice helped last year with a couple guys.

Maybe we can do that, and go to an hour time limit.

Again, I will be gone and away from a PC almost all day Sunday.

Javy Lopez.

Nice pick Crowley. He's been near the top of my board for prolly 10 or so picks. I'm shocked he lasted this long ... with the dearth of catchers and the fact that he'll be DH'ing this year, I think you done good (as much as it pains me to say that) sans Mora.

Now, lets see if there is a run on the few desireable catchers left.

Or do we start the hour picks tomorrow? Meaning, when a member does not initiate a player choice for a draft selection and Swerb does an auto-pick or pick for team need.

ram, I sent you a PM. But the jets will take Lewis (TE) or Mangold with the 29th pick.

For 35, if Mangold drops (I doubt) him, then the best OT available.

Winston, McNeil, Scott, Coledge in that order

I'm not overly concerned at the moment.

Remember, I drafted Armando Benitez and Danny Graves last season and still finished tied for 3rd in saves.

Take a look at the collection of stiffs + Carlos Beltran in your outfield there pal.

Remember where all that smack talk got you last year?
