I'm thinking Byrd to Cle, Decker to Indy happen fast.

That's an upgrade at safety all day long if it happens.

And D'Qwell officially to Indianapolis. Hadn't seen that noted in a thread yet.

The DQ/Trent Richardson reunion will be magical.

Byrd plays a different position than TJ, so no reason they can't have both (unless they think TJ just ain't worth the coin, which I'm 50-50 about).

Outside of Byrd, they're gonna need to get probably 2 other starters out of FA if they expect to upgrade at all positions of need. Can't get it all done in the draft.
It's only progress if you eventually get somewhere.

Donte Hitner a target. To replace Ward and team with Byrd? Same some money on the SS to upgrade the FS. And saving money on a potential better player? Sounds good.

Ive been seeing the same thing from multiple sources online. I think that makes our secondary one of the best in the league. I'd love to sign one of the FA Vets on the cheap to bump buster to the slot.

Bucs will release Revis if they can't trade him by tomorrow night.

Cue the: "We gotta get this guy or this front office Sucks!!" Talk Radio drama.

My take: Only worth it at Veteran minimum or a little higher. Age, ACL already torn, notorious pain in the ass. Best years may be behind him.

Update- Looks like Dansby and Whitner to sign after 4pm.

McCluster may be another guy and tires being kicked on Revis deal as well as Schaub.

Dansby is 32. Wonder realistically how much of an upgrade he is to DQ as an ILB.

If Browns replace Jackson and Ward with Dansby and Whitner, they would pull of a rare free agency feat…they’d get older.

Just spitballing , but maybe the team felt that last years late season Defensive collapse had something to do with lack of veteran leadership. I know what your thinking "D.Jackson was that veteran leadership" but he has been the veteran leader of losing for 6 years now.
The two sports have nothing to do with each other , but I keep thinking back to how the first thing John Davidson of the CBJ wanted to do when he took over was get rid of "culture of losing" by jettisoning the veterans who had been willing participants in that culture for so long.

Push age aside (DQ isn't much younger), he's a solid upgrade. He was really better last year than DQ ever was in any year. Dansby, when he plays well, is a playmaker in a way that DQ never was and never will be.

When he plays poorly, he's DQ.

And this is not meant to be a slight to DQ - just that Dansby is much more aggressive.

Squeeze a couple years out of him, it's not like you can find long term solutions for all the holes in this one offseason, and you'll need some vets to show the kids how to put on a condom.

Somewhere I heard that the Dansby contract is a lot of money up front ($10 mil of the $24 is in the first year alone).. it basically is a 2 year contract for a better fit to the 3-4. Dansby is a much better coverage LB as well, which is DQ's biggest failing. Good signing, methinks.

^^^^^^^ Correct. Dansby was #5 rated ILB in coverage last year. He is more physical and down hill than Ni Qquill. Quill was a read and react type. A good soldier. Good luck in Indy.

The deal they signed Andrew Hawkins to is reportedly like $3 mil a year, which is excessive. Starting to feel like someone got ahold of dad's credit card.

I dunno. Not a Ward fan.

Yeah, he can hit. But that's frowned upon these days in NFL.

He can't cover, he can't stay on the field and he's pretty much a run stopping, two down safety.

Whitner is simply a better player, IMO. And that ain't cuz he's here now. Ward has always had those issues above.

Like govbarney said up there, as well, sometimes you need new voices in that lockerroom. I think that's part of the Dansby and Whitner signings in that Dansby is seen as no less a leader on the field and off than DQ and Whitner is far more of a leader (allegedly) than Ward.

I agree, but they def had discussions on re-upping, unless they low balled him even more so because they knew whitner was coming IDK. Pretty upset about byrd, but I guess if the browns offer you 9 mil per and the saints do too I'd be goin to NO too. Him and Vaccaro at safety is pretty legit.

vaccaro should be the happiest man in the NFL with Byrd signing. If Byrd can actually stay on the field (no small task with that guy either) that may be the best safety tandem in the game. If you want to call Vaccaro a safety. Dude played everywhere except DL last season.

Earl Thomas/Kam Chancellor are clearly ahead of them IMO, but Byrd/Vaccaro would definitely be #2. Chiefs with Eric Berry/Kendrick Lewis (if he resigns) would be 3rd.

Good point. How quickly I've forgotten those guys.

Wondered about this yesterday.

I really don't how happy I'd be to spend loads of money on Tate when I think you can save a bunch and get a drafter RB to give you a lot of production.

I like Ben Tate, but better be for reasonable dollars and years. Guy's not played in a full complement of games for a couple years and his style seems to lend itself to injuries.

That tailgate crowd will love it though. Add the Whitner, Dansby, Tate stuff to the draft and people will back on the bandwagon in time for the preseason.

I woulda liked "Tate in town" a lot better last year. He got his chance to make a case for himself last year, and he looked like he'd hit a wall burst and speed-wise. He looked like JAG, and no reason to be spending major cash for that, especially a RB.
