well he's still getting paid from that contract. LOL. I love this story and forgot all about those days.

I remember the three dollar league. Good times.

The Boston Breakers played in three cities in three years. The San Antonio Gunslingers had their uniforms repossessed, and were sneaking into a high school field to practice. At one point the players went over a month without being paid. Arizona and Michigan traded franchises.

But it was still a step above the XFL and He Hate Me.

Flutie played in Jersey, replaced Sipe.

Jim Kelly played in Houston.

Excellent 30:30 a few years ago- it was one of the first- on the league's history. Everyone more or less blamed Trump for ruining the league. Lot of good players went to the league, three Heisman winners in a row, money, or lack of, and crazy contracts like the one above plus Trump insisting on making it a fall league took it down. But as others have brought up, there would be no fond memories of the late '80s Browns if the league would of lasted.

You guys are kinda missing the point, Steve was a genius with this move, 36 milluon over 40 freakin years. Most likely knowing his NFL days were soon to come to fruition with the short term pay day.

IIRC. Bobby Bonilla is still getting paid by the Mets. The guy writing that check probably says who is Bobby Bo Nilla.

Fair enough, it was about Steve Young still getting paid and it was turned into a USFL nostalgia thread. However, if you think about it, he would be an idiot if he didn't insure an insane contract like that.

That's the point, nobody was getting 36 million dollar contracts back then, and he deferred it/spread it out. Complete genius.

Somewhere out there former owners' trusts in the the WFL and WHA are still paying someone deals as well, I'd imagine.

Love how they used to structure those into annuities.
