The Cost of moving up

Reading many fan boards, it seems that most Browns fans are giddy over trading up to get Quinn but many feel we've paid alot, maybe even too much, to do so.

I've always heard that when you translate any one round pick from the present year, it is roughly equivalant to one round HIGHER the following year.

i.e. This years 3rd round pick = next year's 2nd round pick

If true than the cost of moving up 14 spots from 36 to 22 was essentially a high 2nd round pick.

Heck, THAT's what Butch gave up to move 1 spot to grab KW2!

The other line of thinking is if the Browns had BQ as a Top 10 talent then one could argue that they traded from #36 to #10.

I can't really think of a downside to this trade.

Next year's draft day will seem altogether different with no pick until after 6PM. But it means that all of us golfers can have a leasurely T-Time and start getting drunk at 4PM instead of 10AM next year!

Couple thoughts. Yes ... next years draft party can start with a leisurely round of golf. And not having to start drinking at 9 AM will also help the following days hangover.

The trade, I love it.

The only downside is if the Browns win 4 games or less again this season, and some of the things the Quinn detractors don't like about him (accuracy, ability under pressure) are exposed as big time concerns in his rookie year.

But it's hard not to like the deal.

I can't help but be excited. We get Thomas and Quinn, and I couldn't care less about next year's draft, because those two pieces are with us for the next five years. I've seen it written that we got next year's first round pick this year with Quinn, and I'd say that's about right. Considering how much he'll cost at #22, plus the fact that we don't have to pay a first rounder next year, and I have the feeling that Phil might swing a trade before training camp to put one more piece in place.

I am holding out that we have an outside chance at Michael Bush falling to the 5th round. Give him a medical redshirt this season and we have another piece for next year.

Start scouting DEs for the 2nd and 3rd rounds next year.

Saw an interview with Bobby Petrino last night that basically said "Bush won't get past our next pick".

But yes, if they can add a back with some upside to stick as an option post 8 Ball, this would make this draft perfect.

According to the punditry Dallas was fielding numerous calls about their pick, so that naturally drove the price up. You also have to figure that pick’s potential to be very high in next year’s draft was an important factor in Dallas picking us as its trade partner. Savage was also on ESPN shortly after the trade. He said they didn’t see a signal caller of Quinn’s caliber in next year’s draft, which added momentum to this trade.

I like this deal for a number of reasons. 1st, the Browns addressed the line and our QB situation. I’ve never been a huge Charlie Frye fan. And most importantly it’s a gutsy deal. Romeo and Savage drafted for the future even knowing that another 4-12 season costs them their jobs. Overall this was a very good day. Hopefully the team laid the foundations for a bright future.

Since we essentially got our 2nd rounder back.....we gave up our 3rd and 4th round pick for our 2008 #1 pick to come THIS YEAR. Folks, we DID NOT lose our 2008 1st rounder, we just used it this year.

We lost our 3rd and 4th rounder, that is all.
