Man, trading that 3rd this year to move up in round one looks to be a pretty steep op cost. Lot's of talent was there in round 3 we had to pass up.

I'm no sure t would have mattered as much had Heckert not just turned in a round reminiscent of maniginis 2nd round special two years ago.

Not all but some. You HAVE to hit on a few 4th and 5th to stock your LB's, DB's and OL.

As much as I also dislike the Mericic pick, he's probably one of the safest bets to still be a starter 5 years from now.

Huge mistake typecasting Vickers as only an I FB. I posted his scouting report from 2005. Not my problem if peeps won't do homework.

The TE could have come next yeare or the year after and a back up signed.

That said, Vickers went from bad ass all around player to monster so the question becomes if he changed his body so much he cant go back.

Vickers came into the league as a leaner, better pass-catching Back. He bulked up, became a blocking machine, and dropped tons of balls the last 2 years that could've been big plays had he held on. Also, his effectiveness running the ball went down. Vickers is mainly just a blocker at this point, imho.

How many attempts did he get? Pretty small sample size Hiko.

I'm unconvinced that a guy once compared to Larry Centers as a prospect is now completely locked into being Daryl Johnston. Not sayin he's Marc Edwards, but I still think there were other needs.

If you are real fucking good at something (and Vickers is at being a monster) why would you throw an established career Neil type niche away to redefine yourself at his age?

I don't care. You get more opportunities if you do something other than have the ball clunk off your hands like they were made of cement.

I agree there were other needs and didn't like the Merecic pick. But that's not a defense of Vickers' WCO viability, just that it wasn't as vital (to me) as other positions.

Maybe they just thought Vickers was gonna be too expensive to keep as a FB.

Doesn't matter what we think anyway - Vickers is gone.

I think if they had zero faith in Hardesty, they would've taken a HB already too. If Hardesty goes down, they have nothing but Hillis again, so they must think Hardesty is gonna be at least functional.

Fair to a degree, but we are going from a position (both RBs) that requires four plus players. Looks like they are trying to get 2+ locked down and gonna say fuck it re the rest of the roster.

And with how shitty this team is currently (with the system changes) it's the right approach.

IOW: you could be right, but EVERY spot looks like a top down rebuild right now.

I think they envision Hillis/Hardesty as their version of the Panthers using both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stuart.

Agree. Cheap insurance that they think will be around awhile and covering all bases.

Could very well be.

If they like him that much I sure hope they're right. Personally I'd have gone and let someone have him and gotten my TE next year. They know far more than I do though.

I see it this way: Hillis, Hardesty, Marecic, Cameron, Little, whatever sorts out from the current gaggle at WR. If it all pans out in a couple years, that's a nice set of WCO options for Colt and Paddy.

The defense? Fujita, Roth, and whoever can hold the fort 'til next year, easier so with Rubin, Uncle Phil, and Billy Shears up front.
